Any carpenters in here? Need help w/ stair moulding

So the picture frame moulding install has been going swimmingly up until the angled run of the stairs, and I'm having one helluva time determining the proper angle for the angled run.

What's REALLY pissing me off as well is that it's at a 45* run...so this should be simple as anything!

Anyone on the 'zine that can help?

So do you need to make a turn and go up the stairs? Is this like chair rail that you are doing?

The chair rail is done and was a cinch, I'm having difficulty pinning down the angle of the cut for the picture frame moulding that will run parallel to the angled section of the rail.

SO, the specific portion I'm having trouble nailing down is the angle running UP the stairs only.

You need one of these

Lay it on the moulding that runs up the stairs. If there isn't a piece of moulding running up the wall, take any piece of moulding and lay it down the stairs resting against the wal.

Take this device and lay it on the top of the moulding. It will tell you the angle you need to cut,

The angle I've got.

45*, spot on. 22.5* gives me the "A" angle of the parallelogram, the opposing angles, which I THINK should run at 67.5*, can be achieved via the complementary angle of the 22.5* cut...

Ah, gotcha. You actually might be able to get the angle roughly by using a speed square.

FREE AT LAST, FREE AT LAST...

I friggin' got it. SO, FOR THOSE OF YOU ATTEMPTING SUCH AN ENDEAVOR...here's how it goes:

Running up the steps you're obviously cutting a classical geometric figure, the parallelogram. You're going to make 2 cuts on each piece...one will be using the miter saw, the other one is tricky. Here's how I did it.

Measure the angle of your stairs. In my case, 45* (too easy, right? Same method applies) Divide by 2. 45/2 = 22.5* You now know the angle to set your miter saw at.

Cut one side of each piece to the above angle.

Now, the other side. Since we need to make a 90* turn, we need the COMPLIMENTARY ANGLE (recall, that's the other one that makes a full 90*). In a parallelogram, opposite interior angles add to 90*. SO, 90* - 22.5* = 67.5* ...but your saw doesn't do that! So how can we cut this angle?

THE MITER SAW IS A DIRTY, FILTHY LIAR.
Go and measure that angle you just cut. You measured 67.5*, didn't ya? NOW WHAT?!

Well, looks like we need to CUT TO...NOT AT 22.5*! Take two peices of scrap wood. Using any tool to measure angles, measure an angle of 22.5*. Set your miter to 0. Line up the blade with the angle you just marked. Clamp the wood and cut. Nail the angled cut to the face of the other peice of scrap. You now have a jig at the complimentary angle of 22.5*.

Cut the other side of the moulding.

Lather, rinse, repeat, and enjoy the testosterone rush.

I'm off to conquer my stairs.
