Well, its official. 8 weeks until I run the 2010 Pittsburgh Half Marathon again. Based on my latest 5k time in November (coming off a heavy cycling season) it says if I follow the plan I should be able to run just under a 1:47:00. Don't know if that is going to happen, but hopefully I can get a new PR under 1:56:00!

^ Good luck Artic.

Update on me is I hurt my back... again. But last time I hurt it, once I recovered, I decided to start training with my wife for the 1/2 marathon, so I'm thinking about doing the same this time as well. There's another Rock n Roll marathon and 1/2 in San Diego in June, so starting a plan now would be optimal. I got back into running mostly only 5k's on the tredmill at my max pace and I think that it once again was too harsh on my frame, and according to my chiropractor, I don't have a "sprinter's physique". Yeah, I'm fat, I got it doc lol. Anyway, I'm going back to the long distance, slow but steady pace, and hopefully no more back issues.

Sorry to hear man. Hope you can recover quickly enough to run the half at least... a full is a monster!

Good luck!

Thanks man! I'm definitely not going to attempt the full yet. I need to do at least two more 1/2s before I even consider it.

Learned today that the 1/2 marathon in San Diego is all sold out. No more 1/2 in June, but we're still training as if we're registered and running it. Ran 7.62 miles today. Really the first big run since hurting my back. I had to stop twice after the 6.5 mile point, once for about 10 seconds and once for about a minute. Felt good to run but damn my stamina is nothing where it was just a few months ago.

7.6 miles huh? Thats great for a first run back from a back injury. Be careful so as to not do too much too soon. But you'll get that stamina back soon. Good luck with your training, and sorry to hear you cant sign up for the "San Diago" (lol) run.

I myself have decided to kick it into gear this past week, having run 4mi. 5 of the last 6 days to just get back to where I was in mid Jan.

Good to hear you're back at it Super. As Agranado said, don't over do it to much to fast. I am learning that lesson right now from when I started training at the beginning of March. I went from like 5 miles a week, maybe, to a steady 20 + miles per week. Needless to say my shins weren't to happy for me. Luckily last week was a recovery week for me in my training, so instead of the slow 5 mile runs I road my bike to cross train. Ran 5 miles yesterday and am feeling pretty good. We'll see how the Tempo run goes tomorrow.

Debating whether to sign up for a half this summer. I'm going to run from my house to SF this weekend (about 12 miles) to see how I feel and whether I want to put in the effort.

I know for half marathons you don't really need to taper as much as when you run a full, but I have been following a training plan that I got from Runner's World Smart Coach Program and the last two weeks before my half it has me running more miles in each week than I have in any other week up to this point. Plus it has me doing a tempo run the week of the race. For you veteran runners does this sound right?

My shins are still acting up a little bit, combo of where I run and over training I think, and I wanted to rest up a little before the race. To see if I could get them feeling good.

I am NOT a veteran, but that doesn't sound right.

My training schedule has me running 12, 20,12 and 6 miles max distance in the four weeks leading up to the marathon with the last week being 6, rest, 3, rest, 2 rest, Marathon. (if that makes sense)

More than anything, listen to your body. If you need a few rest days, take em!

Yeah, that is kinda what I thought also. Next week it has me doing easy runs of 4 & 3 miles on Tues & Wednesday, respectively, then a 6 mile run on Thursday (4 miles at race tempo), a easy run of 3 miles on Tuesday, then my long run of 12 on Sunday.

The week before the race it has me doing easy runs of 3 miles on Tues & Wednesday, a 5 mile run (3 miles at race tempo), then resting until the race on Sunday. We'll see how I feel next week and go from there.

Good luck in your race

I agree with bgsm1th.

I usually taper 1 week out, even for marathons. The last week is all about easy runs and some fast short run. It's all mental for me at that point, just making me feel fast and rested.

I'd listen to your body and as long as you've had some good long run up until now I think you'll be fine. Just keep up the running even if it's shorter.

Well, after that post on Thursday I went out to do my 4 mile recovery run, did mile intervals on Wednesday, and got about a half mile in and something finally gave. I could barely walk the pain was so bad. I think the mile intervals did me in. So I got home and soaked in the tub, had my wife stretch me (she's a PT), and then dunked my legs in an ice bath (which by the way, hurts like hell). Shins were feeling a lot better after that. I haven't run since then, was in Boston to watch my sister in law run the BM and wanted to let my legs heal up some. Today after work I'm going to cross train with a 25-30 mile ride on my bike, then try to go for a 3-4 mile run on Friday to see how the shins feel. It is isn't bad, I'll probably do a 6-8 mile run on Sunday.

As long as these damn things don't get any worse, I'm pretty sure I'll be OK for the race next Sunday as I've run through the slight discomfort I've had up to last Thursday. Here's hoping....

Well the half was this weekend. Knocked off almost 6 minutes from my time last year (1:56:48). Ran a 1:49:54. Wanted to get under 1:50 and did It rained pretty hard the whole entire race and the wind made racing harder. But those things are out of our control. All in all, it was a good race. Now time to recover....

Thanks guy.

Dallison - I've been pretty surprised myself on how I've improved since last year. But at the start of this year I had a much better base fitness level than what I did when I first started to run just to run last year. Think I am going to go for the full 26.2 next year to commemorate turning the big THREE-O.

Yeah, around mile 10 in this past race, the thought crossed my mind "Why the hell do you want to run a full marathon?" Was in a pretty good amount of pain at that point and couldn't imagine going for another 16 miles!

If I do it, I'm going to do the Akron Road Runner Marathon. It is a Fall marathon so I'll have all spring/summer to get a base and train for it. Plus it is pretty close to Pittsburgh and is pretty dead flat. I would love to run it here in Pittsburgh, but with it being an early Spring race, running/training in the winter is really not that much fun.

Will be looking to break four hours, like most people for a marathon. Pretty much works out to a even 9min/mile pace. I THINK i can handle that. Just a matter of getting the base miles in.

yeah the marathon is all about the base. make sure you dedicate the time to get the miles under your feet. the first one is tough the next one is, dare I say it, fun

So glad to come back to this thread and see people still posting updates about running! I myself am on a pushup/situp/run/yoga stretch regiment about 4-5 days/week right now.

2x20 military press
2x20 diamond press
2x20 wide press

4x40 inclined situp bench

4 mi run

a couple sun salutations here and there in between.

Just keeping my body in check while the summer breezes by.. come fall/winter, I think I'll start training for another 1/2, unless I'm feeling ballsy and want to go the full 26.2.

Hope you're all extremely well and healthy and fit!
