Maybe try shortening your stride or even switching your stride around mid-run. I have found that both of those tricks seem to help my knee.

i went in for 7:30 this morning and got prepped for surgery. I went under around 11 am and it took about 45 minutes. They cleaned things up and the dr said that he saw where the problem was and said that this may clear things up.

@ 8 i was put in my gown and had to lay in the hosp. bed until around 10:30-11 until i went in. They had me on an iv that was dripping pretty good. I had to use the bathroom a couple times b/c of this.

When i came to i was groggy as expected. After about 30 minutes i was good enough to get up and get discharged.

When i got up, i was a little more woozy as i thought.

I was a freakin mess when we went to wendy's for something to eat. I couldn't speak correctly and was a plain mess.

My knee has swollen up like the dr said. The wife just went to get my vicotin just in case i need it.

i am full of energy but am worn out from today , if that is even possible.

I can walk on it w/o any problems for the most part.

we will see how this works out

Sounds good, hopefully it fixes the problem. When do you start rehab? The first couple days will probably be sore (if it's anything like my shoulder scopes).

thanks, i am using advil during the day so i can function and vicotin at night. they didn't need to do a probe, once he got in there, he ground down some bone and my wife remembers patella somewhere in the conversation after my surgery.

That woman is a saint for getting up at 5:45 and getting to the hospital at 7:30 on the nose. She was there all day until we left at 2pm.

so, yes, i am in pain and this should last a week or two, but this is nothing compared to what our men and women are dealing with overseas. so i can deal.

I am praying that this is the answer and that i can get back to running ina couple months.

I was running at the track at the park again. I'm beginning to feel stiffness in my knee as I begin to run. I took westas2 advice and change my stride to a shorter one. I was worried with the stiffness in my knees when i ran the first half mile, I feel the pain at every impact, but I kept going at a jogging speed. Luckily, my knees loosened up after 1/2 mile, and I increased my stride and speed. I ran a full mile yesterday, and wow, what an accomplishment! No pain or stiffness today. Hope there is nothing wrong with my knees, as I'll be keeping up with my mile run .

make sure you have a good 3-5 months of mileage in before you really begin speed and hills.
keep your speed down until you are really comfortable.
Ice up afterwards and make sure you have the proper shoes!!!!

Make sure you stretch afterwards and warm up before intense or long runs.

I have a new, good pair of neutral running shoes as I have a slight underpronation. Even so, I am still having knee pains. Blame it on my weak muscles around my knees. My only hope is to do some leg lift exercises on my day off, and take an extra day of rest between runs if needed. My last run, I ran one mile, but with some pain inside my knee, so it's slowing down my time by a lot. I'm going back to run today, so I'll see if there are any improvements to my knees.

I'll try to do a bunch of quad strengthening throughout the day. I can tell they need much work by exercising them, but it's a good feeling to get those muscle back in shape again.

Yesterday I ran a little over a mile, but since I was only going at a jogging pace, it took me a longer than before due to my sore knee. The good thing is that my knee stops hurting when I'm done with running. My body was always good at recovery when I was younger, and I never had any serious sports injuries in my life . Knock on wood there. But the sore knee is a big issue still. I'll have to keep doing the quad exercises daily if I want to reach my goal of an eight minute mile.

went for a follow up to surgery today, everything looks good and swelling is minimal. He did a lateral release of the kneecap and smoothed out the underside of the kneecap. I'll post pics of the surgery later.

So I'm just getting back in the gym after about a 10 month break. I'm in horrible shape, and I'm really looking forward to getting back into the swing of things. On my off days, I want to start running to trim down some of my 'excess' fat. My gf and I decided to try this...

http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml

Thoughts, suggestions? I tried it in the past and only got to week 6 before I stopped (the gym as well), don't know why. Either way, it seemed to be working pretty well, but I remember at one point I was getting REALLY bad lower back pains. So bad, that even after stopping, I could barely move, let alone bend over or sit down. Not sure if this has to do with shoes or what, because I'm a noob at running. Any suggestions before I decide to tackle this as well with the gym?

BTW, great job everyone! I'm jealous

`John

I went from couch to 5k this summer. When I started running my mile time was around 15 minutes - last night I ran 3.5 in 26 minutes. Here's what worked for me (always always stretch) - I tried to gradually increase my distance so that I was always running for 25-30 minutes. Just track your distance/time and always try to go a little further in the same amount of time. If you can only run/jog for 15 minutes, then do that and walk the other 10 minutes. Next time run/jog for 16 minutes and walk for 9. The point is you slowly increase the distance and keep the time the same.

FYI - I tried adding sprints at the end or my runs and ended up hurting my knee - the key, for me at least, is gradual distance increases. You are younger than me so you might be able to handle the sprints - didn't work for me.

it has been just over a month since surgery. As of right now i am able to walk normally. You would not be able to tell that i have had any surgery. i am able to ride my bike, but i am not ablee to use my left leg to really dig down and pedal hard. I can maintain about 90% of my pace. I can't go fast up hills since i need both legs to pedal hard.

For the second time i have taken the dogs on a walk.

When we were in vermont 10 days ago, we went on a 4.6 mile hike that was 2.3 uphill and 2.3 down. It was getting dark and we were hustling.

I finally did squats without any weights 2 days ago. I was not able to really bend down without pain in my left knee.

I have not advanced to doing one leg squats, but i should be there in 2 weeks.

My knee is still a little swollen, but it is from the exercising that doing.

I am only doing leg lifts at the moment to strenthen my quads and as i mentioned before, just added squats.

I don't have the muscletone that i used to have for obvious reasons.

i also need to keep moving my kneecap side to side so it does not settle like it was before.

I hope to jog my 1st mile in a couple weeks, but i am not sure if i will have to delay that to properly recover.

^ Sounds good, so far. Keep it slow and steady and resist the urge to really try that new knee out. You'll be running in the spring for sure.

Does driving the Porsche count as rehab?

Haven't run 5k distance in a while, been running 4 miles every other day with a 6 miler on the weekend. Last night was cool and dry, who knows when that will happen again, so I ran my 3.1 mile course just to see what I could do. Absolutely crushed it in 23:08. Considering my first 5k this spring was just under 30min, I am stoked with that result. Can't wait for the 5k's next spring..........

here's a turkey trot near you in november. These are always a lot of fun. You meet the real diehards and nutjobs(in the nicest way) when the weather gets cold.

It's great to see your times come down after sticking with it and dedicating time and energy to the sport. I remember you were psyched to get your times down to 26 min in a 5k.

I am sure you will pr at your next race.

I hear you on that sub. I have been focusing on cycling (road and mtn) this summer more so than running, but with the time change, cycling is pretty much done for the year unless on the weekends. So I am going to start to build back up a running base for the Pittsburgh Half in May. Anxious to see how my fitness level from cycling transfers over to running. I did a 5K out of now where back in August with a friend from work and ran a 23:02. Was really surprised by that. Want to get under 23:00 at the Turkey Trot this year. Ran it in 26:XX last year!

Went on a run today. Did 3 miles with hills. I have not lost as much endurance as I expected though my mile times were a little slower and my legs were feeling it more at the end. I'm not as worried about picking up my routine again - I just need to get out of the habit of taking weeks off.

I ran about 3 last night also, except it was 36 degrees here. Pretty cold. My motivation is that from here on out, any night where it isn't snowing/raining can't be wasted!

I pulled a chest muscle, somehow (I think while sleeping) and it hurts to move my upper body and even when I take in moderate to deep breaths so I think I'm gonna take a little break from running.

Well, did the Downtown Turkey Trot on Thursday. Ran a 22:52. This was my first race last year when I decided I was going to start to run after watching my sister-in-law complete the NYC Marathon. I ran a 24:37 then, for improvement!!

Nice work. That's a good time.

I was bummed, I went out to get the paper Thursday morning and there was some Turkey Trot going right past my house. I need to figure out what the deal was with that one.
