So when one first starts running regularly ..

Is it normal for my lower back to hurt? Basketball team took a jog for about 10 minutes and in the middle, my lower back started fucking up pretty hard. It's more of a muscle pain, not a spine pain.

This has actually happened a lot when I run for an extended amount of time, not sure if my running posture is incorrect or if it fades away with repetition/time. Or maybe I'm too big to be running. 6', 265 pounds, but for what it's worth, I'm more athletic than it sounds .. Martial arts, basketball, hockey, I hit the gym almost everyday as well, but when it comes to running, there's plenty wrong with me.

I'm heading to the gym to hit the hot tub .. Doing everyday tasks with a sore back is not cute.

two things come to mind, shoes and strength.

sometimes worn out or incorrect running shoes can impact your feet, legs, and back. i would get fitted for a pair of shoes at a reputable running store.

your back and shoulders are very important when running. well, more back than shoulders. If your back is weak you will have back pain from either pushing it or just having a weaker back. Runners are usually lighter than where you are at right now.

make sure you do proper stretching, that is also key. I would also check out www.runnersworld.com
they are extremely helpful with nutrition and your body

stretch the shit out of your hammies...due to the tightness of your hamstrings, those muscles are pulling on the muscles of your lower back...i recommend you stretch every morning (even if you're not running), i had the same type of problems and after a little while of not doing anything about it, the muscles in my lower back were shifting my vertibrae, which is painful

good luck bro...and 6'0 265 ??

What shoes are you running in? I hope not BB sneakers. Get a good pair of running shoes. Are you flat flooted? Do you need a better arch in your shoes? Suprised you don't have knee issues at that weight.

a good idea is for you to head over to the cross country team and let them show you the stretches to fix this problem as i use to be a former varsity runner. Stretching is the easiest and key factor to running. I use to have the same problem although im 5'8 140 pounds. Also your posture and form is key to longevity... Let them teach you some good stretches and get the right shoes becuz it makes a world of a difference.. i suggest asics =)

x2 on the strecthing. I used to think stretching for 15 minutes before muay thai was ghey but it really helps cut down on strains, aches, and injury. Has even benefited my surfing which puts a lot of strain on the lower back.

Good fitting shoes are key. I have flat and wide feet and found New Balance to work the best.

Thanks for the input guys, I might go ahead and pay a running shop a visit today .. A few people in my Shaolin Arts class run regularly, so I'll ask them for stretching tips as well ..

Oh, and I run in Converse basketball shoes .. They have to be the worst ball shoe ever made, I regret ever buying them.

Yeah that's a big problem. They're not providing the support you need for the constant pounding of running.

Unfortunately when I didn't run for a long time I had that same back pain I was out of shape. It will go away eventually. I still run on my basketball shoes but I will soon get some running shoes as my legs were sore as hell the next few days even though I'm back in shape.
