Gym I go to is all women trainers except for 1 guy. Its a YMCA gym though so I'm sure thats because most of the water classes and yoga etc are majority women.

Does anyone go to a gym with a swimming pool and/or basketball court? If so, which ones?

I know Bally's has a pool and 24 has a basketball and racquetball court or w/e....

I didn't even think of that. I'm gonna look around to see if any gyms have pools around here.
Swimming distance is a pain in the ass, but it's probably the best aerobic workout. No impact either, which is good cause one of my knees is all jacked up from having a flat foot.

My gym has two indoor pools (one kiddie) and one outdoor pool and a jacuzzi, four basketball courts, four racketball courts, and an indoor track, in addition to all the other stuff (tons of free weights, machines, cardio equipment - many with their own individual TVs).

I used to be at YMCA but now at LA fitness. It's nice there, not too crowded and they have a sauna with a decent pool. It's a newer place so everything is relatively nice.

Oh yea I remember this thread.

I cancelled my LA Fitness membership about a year ago and since then have just been doing cardio/running and pushups/pullups. About a week ago I got a membership to Snap Fitness. Dunno if anybody has heard of it but they are all over the country.

It is tiny compared to the bigger gyms like 24hr and LA Fitness; in fact, it is in a shopping center and not that big at all, BUT it has everything I need to get a good quick workout in. I never needed a pool or racquetball court or bball court. This place has all the machines and freeweights and cardio equiptment I need. Also, it is literally just 3 min away from where I live which is another advantage. Also, unlike your chain gyms, I can go anytime I want to work out even if it is 'closed' because it has a card I swipe at the door to unlock it so if I feel like going to workout at 1am I could do so. Plus, packed there is like 5 people... never have to wait to use anything and everyone is real friendly, including the staff.

Just thought I'd share.

I prefer small gyms like that to big ones but the problem is to stay open since they need members to pay the bills.

Yea, that was the only thing makign me a little hesitant to sign up at first. But when they signed me up I saw a giant stack of customer contracts and their personal training calendar was packed so I think they will be fine. Since it is 24/7 I'm guessing most people work out in the morning or during the day.

Oh yea I forgot to add, the place is super clean, they really take good care of the place.

Thinking about joining a smaller gym nearby here.... looks like it has everything you'd need, plus it isn't a stuffy hellhole like some other budget gyms I've been to. They have a good amount of machines, but the real pull is that they don't require a contract and they have offers in the news for $10/month memberships, the kicker there is that you can only go M/W/F or Tu/Th/S but if you want to pay $14/mo you can go anyday.

I've since changed after my original post in this thread. I don't compete in powerlifting anymore so I bought a Bowflex to stay in shape. Surprisingly I'm in better shape (looks wise) than I was when doing ultra heavy freeweights. I know it's not a substitute for freeweights and if I decide to compete again I'll have to go back to free weights but I'm impressed with this machine that I used to make fun of.

I used to cut to 198 and walked around at 220-ish. Since I've been on this machine and not worrying about not putting on muscle, I'm up to 233lbs and very low BF. It's probably because I use it every day. Being in the spare bedroom, just a walk away makes a huge difference. If I skip a day, it feels weird. I've learned that even though it's not as good as going to the gym and hitting the free weights, the fact that I use it regularly is more important and I have better results.

The mountain biking and other activities more than take care of my cardio.

I have enough friends with memberships to 24hour and Body Exchange that I can always go as a guest if I feel the need to get out of the house.

Just more proof you don't need thousands of pounds of weights to get in shape. Gyms = great marketing.

Unless I traveled a lot for work, I would never go to a chain gym. Find a good hard core powerlifting gym--they will have everything you need even if you are more of a bodybuilder and there will be way less attitude--powerlifters can either do it or not. I go to a hole in the wall place that has dumbbells to 150 (and a 200 lb kettlebell!), tons of benches, tons of squat racks, two power platforms, and a decent array of cardio equipment and basic machines. $20 per month, no contract, 5 minutes from my house. I think there are more 45 lb plates there at my little 2000 sq ft gym than there are in a 100,000 sq ft Lifetime. In a nutshell, if you want to lift weights, find a real gym--they are out there if you look.

Anyone ever go to RetroFitness? Was thinking about doing that in the summer with some of my friends. There are a few nearby and the price isn't really that bad.

Same lol.

When I was still in college of course I would without a doubt go there becuase it was free and close by and had tooooons of workout equipment, rock climbing wall, basketball courts, indoor soccer courts, indoor/outdoor pool, etc. State of the art awesomeness.

But this is after the fact lol. I could still pay an astronomical fee to join another local university's gym but no way is the price worth it.
