Gym is closing down :-(

Well I went to the gym last night to find that it got bought out by Planet Fitness and will be closing down. I joined this gym about a year ago because its just a small town place and its cheap $19/month with no contract. So now I have to decide if I just want to cancel or join Planet Fitness or some other gym. Problem is that all the other gyms are way more expensive, and the closest Planet Fitness is really out of the way until they finally build a new one down the street from my current gym later this year.

Im just ranting cause this really irritates me that I might have to pay another registration fee and I don't like the thought of a large chain gym

Did they say why Planet Fitness is buying and then shutting it down? Seems like a waste of money, unless they're just driving away competition for another of their locations.

Do you have a decent YMCA near you?

Yeah it seems like there killing the competition. Ive heard of them doing the same thing to two other small time gyms in the area.

There is a YMCA near but the dues are really expensive Granted they give you access to a lot of stuff but I don't really use all that stuff so the extra money is a waste for me

Ask about a grandfather clause...My co-worker joined a mom and pop gym and it was bought out by NYSC....While I was paying 60 bucks a month to go to NYSC, he was paying $20 because he got grandfathered in...

Yeah the gym I used in Indinapolis growing up I paid $15 for a youth membership which went to $20 after I turned 18. They were bought by Gold Gym, and my membership stayed intact at that $20 a month. When I transfered to the Golds here in San Diego the manager asked me how I got such a great deal. I'm happy

Talk to the gym manager and they should do this without any issues.

Update:

Ok so the first girl I talked to there didnt know what she was doing. The gym didn't get bought out by planet fitness. The owner of the gym bought into a planet fitness franchise and actually owns three others. They are leaving the current gym under basic operation until the new place is built down the street. So last night I converted my membership and now I only pay $10/month and it didn't cost me anything to switch. If I want unlimited guest privileges and unlimited tanning I could pay $19/month with a year contract. Not going for that yet cause I have no interest in tanning . This actually worked out well. I got a free tshirt, im paying less, and I will be using brand new equipment

I absolutely despise Planet Fitness. My girl friend used to belong to one. I would go with her a few times to show her what machines/exercises she should do to target certain muscle groups and problem areas. While I was there I was mortified.

[rant]
Walking in it was like 90F. I guess thats supposed to induce weight loss........ or heat stroke. Thats the first problem.

Next they only had like 4 bottles of spray sanitizer for the entire gym. Due to the low price of membership, there are TONS of people there, couple that with the amount sweat, and it is disgusting.

Finally, they have this attitude that its a "judgment free zone." What the hell is that supposed to mean. I'll tell you. It means that nothing there will motivate you to make yourself better. They have no dumbells over 60lbs, they moved out all the free weights, benches, squat racks, EVERYTHING for Smith Machines, and all other machines. So you can only go so far, and thats its. And God-forbid you let out a grunt (not a yell that certain gym jerk-offs do), or drop the weights on the floor, they have a light and a siren called a "no lunk alarm." So this judgement free zone now points out someone who is pushing themselves, to achieve better results.[/rant]

so my advice, is run as fast as you can from Planet Fitness

Yea I have to pretty bad feelings myself about this "judgment free zone". At this location there keeping dumbells upto 75lbs and they are also keeping all the normal free weights/benches/etc... They will be located in a separate room away from the open area of machines but I don't care. I figure for now anyway im going to the same gym I have for the last year but at half the cost. Ill make my final decision about this new place once they open the new location. This is also why I haven't went with the contract membership yet.
