Dedicated to workout but diet always gets messed up
SubscribeI tried dieting 2 days in a row. First off I wake up at 5 am to go to work then I bought a pound of caesar chicken salad at vons and on my lunch which is at 11 I eat half of it then I get so hungry around 2 but I don't eat the other half until 3. After I finish the whole half I still get hungry so I end up cheating with a burger which is down the street from where I work. All I tried drinking also was water but I always end up craving for a vitamin water or something with sweets. Can anyone help?
i want to ride my bicycle
don't diet. just eat healthy. eat more chicken/turkey, eat less red meat. cut out fast food and eat out less.
instead of a burger go for a sandwich, light on the fatty/high calorie things like mayo and go with wheat bread.
it's a lifestyle not a diet.

I eat healthy during the week, and work out or run everyday. Then on Friday night & Saturday I eat whatever I want. Get in the mindset that during the week you watch what you eat, but on the weekend reward yourself for the hard work.

I still workout on Saturday so even when I do eat "bad" there should be no negative effects from straying from my diet.

I honestly think that everyone needs to get out of the mindset that they are "missing" something if they eat healthy foods in reasonable portions. You really shouldn't want to "reward" yourself by eating crap on the weekend. You should be happy to stay away from fast foods, desserts, etc. In fact, you should strive for a mindset in which eating those kinds of things disgusts you and the real "reward" is that no one is actually forcing you to eat them.

I had high cholesterol, so that is the #1 reason I am working out. I eat fish/chicken during the week, and stay away from red meat. On the weekend I'll have a hamburger, not always, but if I feel like one I will. This is what I meant by rewarding myself. I don't go straight to McDonald's Saturday for lunch & dinner just to "reward" myself. I still watch what I eat when I go out, but with less care about the amount of calories I eat.

Which is fine. However, you'll never reach a reasonable body fat percentage (4-5%) by binge eating on the weekends (even if it is healthy). You should watch your caloric intake every day of the week, unless, you're a professional athelete who burns a couple thousand calories per day.

I don't binge eat.. just eat more. I have lost weight and put on muscle doing what I have been doing, so there is no reason to think that it is not working. I still watch my calories every day, but eating 1 meal that is unreasonable isn't bad.

Hmm...well if I ate one unreasonable meal, I'd be so depressed I'd want to kill myself (and perhaps take a few others with me). I guess I'm just healthier than you

Not necessarily. I went years going to the gym and sticking with the workouts, but ate whatever the hell I wanted. It showed. I will say that I believe that diet is every bit as important, if not more, as training, if you really want to get fit. It's not easy to train enough, or hard enough, to compensate for a crappy diet.Originally Posted by Whiskers

To the OP, dude you just have to decide to do it and stick with it. There's no magic formula. Eat clean and train hard and the results will follow. Drink a lot of water too. It's good for you and it helps regulate appetite. Eat 5-6 300-500 calorie meals a day instead of three big ones. Lots of veggies and fruit, and lean meats too. Lift weights and do cardio.
The bottom line is, until you decide to do it and commit to it, it won't happen. The good news is that once you get started and start seeing results, it'll build on itself and you'll gain some momentum. The hardest part is starting.

I understand what you're saying. My performance in the gym was never at its best while I was eating poorly. It wasn't until I embraced the whole lifestyle that it all came together.Originally Posted by Whiskers

I guess my point was that training and diet have to go together if you really want to get fit.

I just read a very good book (Natural Hormone Enhancement - Rob Faigin). It's essentially a low-carb approach, but has some very good guides where you can actually live with it and not totally deprive yourself. It also makes a couple points worth adding to the discussion. Western diets are exceptionally high in carbs (sugar, flour based products). this is empty energy for your body, and is why you crave them and are starving again shortly after eating them. I won't recite the whole book, but I was stunned at how I overloaded my body with carbs/sugar with what I thought was a "good" diet.
High carbs turn into high blood sugar, leading to over production of insulin, which tells your body to store fat and burn sugar. Problem is Western diets are so high-carb that you never really get out of this "sugar burning / fat storing" state. It's why people can still eat next to nothing and not loose weight.
Second, Western culture wants to make you believe every meal should be a reward. I totally changed my mindset on eating by realizing that some meals - if not most of them - should be for the purpose of giving your body what it needs to run. If you set out to get pleasure from every meal, you're going to have a terrible diet. It's not like I suffer - far from it. But I've been doing this for about 2 months now - I've lost 10 pounds, and I have more energy than I did at 30. I'm actually in better physical condition too. Just made me a believer in how badly we can treat our bodies with food and not even realize it...

There's nothing "reasonable" about a 4-5% BFP. Nobody can maintain that level for more than a very short time without detrimental side effects. Most pro bodybuilders peak at 3-4% for competitions.Originally Posted by wstevens
