Exclamation Getting 8k miles (about) on MID before 0% oil life..am I driving to hard?

Hi guys and gals.

I've got a '12 awd with about 40k on the clock now. I changed the oil at 36k when I got it down to 20% on the mid because I was going on long road trip. The car was used so I don't know how the last oil was treated.

So anyway my mid as of today says I have 50% life left, with about 4k miles on that oil. 2k is absolutely highway with the cruise mostly set around 80mph. The rest of the 2k miles is a combo of city and highway.

With that in mind, I do drive harder than grandma for sure but I though I would get a lot more life from the oil. Closer to 10-15k from synthetic.

I'm using Mobil 1 5w-20 and K&N oil filter.

lol no you're not driving too hard.

6-8k oil intervals sound perfect!!

now, be sure to check your oil level often!

I don't think the computer is smart enough to know "oh, my owner put in synthetic, I must be getting 10-15K miles". The computer theoretically should calculate oil life based on driving habits but your if you want to run 10-15K miles OCI on synthetic, then you better get your oil tested to ensure there's still life on there. Blackstone Labs.

Or just not follow the computer if you know better

I'm going to send out my oil next time I change it. $25 for a check up?! Sounds like a good investment to know my car is doing well or not!

Does everyone actually use the MID?

I'm changing every 5k miles with Penzoil Platinum + M104 filter just for peace of mind. Stretching out oil changes to 8k (or more) I don't really see as saving but maybe a hundred bucks or so a year.

As suggested though, Blackstone Labs would be the best test to see if you can stretch that far.

For the SH-AWD TL's I would highly suggest using a 5W-20/30 oil or even Mobil 1 0W-40 European formula. They tend to burn oil compared to the FWD models.

Follow the MID with synthetic and you will never have an issue. Don't use the 0W-20 oil, it's way to thin in my opinion.

Check the oil level every time you get gas!

That sounds about right.

I have a 2012 SH-AWD as well and I use full synthetic oil with K&N Oil filter. My car is almost at 40K, bought it brand new with only 10 miles on it. So far, all of the oil changes have been done between 7500 and 8000 mark. I tend to change it once the MID is below 5%. So, no, you are not driving it hard at all.

These cars are designed for 7500 mile oil changes with or without synthetic oil. Although synthetic oils can go longer Honda does not recommend going longer for their cars.
