2012 TL SH-AWD Tech - 54k update

Wanted to share a positive story about my wife's '12 TL SH-AWD Tech. Purchased new in Oct 2012 with 6 miles on the odometer, Built in Feb 2012. With only 54k miles on the clock, she obviously doesn't drive it a lot. Given the lower miles, I'm not really on a maintenance schedule that matches what the car tells me, since I'm more time-based than mileage-based. Previously, aside from oil changes, I'd done two transmission fluid fill/drain actions, changed the front xfer case once, changed the rear diff twice, and flushed the brake fluid. Only original fluid in the car is the coolant, and that's something I'll worry about in the fall at the 7 year mark (and talk about whether a timing belt/water pump/tensioner job makes sense at that point). Regular filter changes as well. Also a rare car in that it uses zero oil between changes.

Today I brought it in for an oil change and another transmission fluid fill-n-drain (and also a front diff lube change since they had a combo deal). They called back to say it's done, and gave me a debrief on the state of the rest of the car. Front and rear brake pads measure at 6-7mm, all fluids full and looking good, no wear or corrosion on any parts underneath (unusual given I live in NH). They said that they have customers looking for a "cherry" TL like this. My wife still states "you can have it when I die". :-)

Just wanted to share an experience where the TL is one of the most reliable cars we've owned (and we've owned a lot over the years....)

Good to hear it's treated you well. Good job on the transmission fluid service. Keep doing it frequently like that and it should last a long time. I have 188K on mine and it's working as well as the day I bought it. I'm FWD but I believe the transmission it the same 6AT - possibly slightly different due to the AWD interface but the guts are likely the same.

Yea - transmission itself is the same, although you have to service the transfer case as well as the rear diff. I've been doing a tranny fill/drain every 18K miles or so, and just did the second transfer case lube change. I don't pay attention to the car's maintenance schedule much and go by calendar vs miles....

When you say drain and fill at the dealership is the that BG transmission fluid exchange they use with the machine? Cause recently I had my 2013 TL FWD serviced and they completed the BG transmission service and an oil change in 30 minutes. I was shocked at how fast it got done.

Actually it's just draining the fluid out and putting fluid back in - a little over 3 quarts I believe. Honda/Acura in the past has typically recommended against the fluid transfer systems that essentially pump new fluid to the entire system in a single process. Dealers typically do 3 times of a drain/fill to accomplish a complete change, if required. For me, I just drain out the fluid I can just by taking out the lower plug and replace what I took out. I do that about every 2nd or 3rd oil change.....

That's what I thought the procedure was. Since I had 2 drain and fills prior to getting the BG Transmissin Fluid Exchange Service at Acura. I’m just surprised they got the car done so fast compared to the drain and fill which took them an hour.
