Lightbulb Official So-Cal Meet-Up Info

Ok here's what I have come up with so far but I need y'all to help me promote this so we get a decent turn out.

Location:
Former Ikea of Tustin
5 Freeway at Jamboree Blvd.
Tustin

Date: Sunday, November 9

Time: 10:00 AM - 2:00 PMish

Map: Map of Location

Rough Directions: (For better ones plug in Interstate 5 at Jamboree Rd. Tustin into Yahoo Maps for customized directions or use the Intersection feature of your Navi )

From the South (San Diego):
5 Freeway North to Jamboree Exit
Proceed East to first signal
First signal turn LEFT into parking area
LEFT again at first drive
Immediate LEFT to meet area
(The meet area is visible from Jamboree on your LEFT)

From the North (LA):
5 Freeway South to Jamboree
LEFT (East) on Jamboree
Proceed East to first signal
First signal turn LEFT into parking area
LEFT again at first drive
Immediate LEFT to meet area
(The meet area is visible from Jamboree on your LEFT)

From Points East (Inland Empire):
Your best bet is probably the 261 Tollway. 261 Tollway to Irvine (5 Freeway).
North on 5 to Jamboree.
Proceed East to first signal
First signal turn LEFT into parking area
LEFT again at first drive
Immediate LEFT to meet area
(The meet area is visible from Jamboree on your LEFT)

Experience: I have been here before with previous meets when I had my Pontiac and the site can comfortably hold 10-20 cars if we get there around 9 on a Saturday or Sunday morning.

Eats: There is a Taco Bell, In-And-Out, and Stuart Andersen's within walking distance as well as a number of other shops.

Rough Plan: We're gonna meet up and go get something to eat and maybe take a cruise or just hang.

I'll try to get there early so look for a Carbon Grey TSX with TSX XTC whale tale tags

Tinky is a moderator, can we get your permission to post a sticky in the Car Talk forum? Seems like most people would check that forum first. This may get more SoCal people's attention, and possibly a good turn out.

According to what I read on the web Ikea closed that location and moved over to the 405 in Costa Mesa at Harbor.

Nov 9 is the best compromise I could come up with. Any later and you run into the Thanksgiving/Christmas rush.

Do a search for Tustin, Irvine, Costa Mesa, Newport Beach. Since tourist season is ending you may be able to find a good deal.

I'm thinking no earlier than 10 in the morning. I have to come from San Diego and hell if I am getting up before 9 on a Sunday.

Hmm... well we could do it the 9th or the 16th.

The 9th was more beneficial because that Monday is Veteran's Day.

Maybe I should put the dates up for a vote.

Check out the Embassy Suites on Dyer at the 55 in Santa Ana. They have Internet access in the rooms, and the price is not too bad (I have stayed there for as little as $89/night). Woolley's Petite Suites across the street also (allegedly) has Internet access, but I have never stayed there.

Definitely avoid the Best Western that's just down the street from the Embassy Suites. They only have Internet in some of the rooms, and even though I specifically requested it when I made my reservation over the phone with their desk clerk, when I arrived they did not have a room with 'net access available.

I had to have an unpleasant fight with the night clerk; needless to say, I haven't been back since.

If 'net access is not important to you, the La Quinta on Sand Canyon at the 5 in Irvine is an interesting place. They took an old grain elevator and made a motel out of it.

Both are within a 10 minute drive of the former Ikea store.

How close is this to Disney Land? I'm driving out to Anahiem on Wed. the 6th and will be there all weekend. The Double Tree hotel is about 2 miles from DL and that is where I'll be. I'd like to hang out if it's not too far. I'm driving 25 hours I guess a 1/2 hour or so would be so bad.

15 minutes or so south on the 5 Freeway.

Now come on people, let's get word out about this. There has to be more than 4-5 of us in SoCal that have a TSX!

The 8 Freeway (I-8 to non Californians) is open. That's not too far from Phoenix but you will have to go through Yuma, San Diego and then up to Anaheim via the 5 Freeway.

I don't know about the 10. It may be open.

I think I-10 is open. The fwy that was closed due to the fire was the new section of the 210.

Speaking as someone who has driven between Tustin and Tucson periodically for the last 3 years, the best route from Phoenix would be to take the 10 west to the 15 south to the 91 west to the 241 to the 261. The 8 has less traffic for most of the way, but once you enter San Diego county the traffic gets VERY heavy, especially on the 5 north from SD to OC. The 91 is heavy, too, but you only have to deal with about 9 miles of it before you can escape onto the 241, whereas you're stuck on the 5 (or the 15) for 80 miles or so. Plus, if you take the 15 north from SD, you'll still have to drive on the 91 (i.e. you get the worst of both worlds).

By the time this meet takes place, the wildfires won't be an issue. Of course, there may be some new ones by then. I hope your TSX has the nav system.

OBTW, I should mention that the 241 and the 261 are toll roads - bring about $5 in cash with you if you decide to take that route. WELL worth it to bypass the traffic mess on the 91 as well as the 55 (the other, non-toll route).

LOL!! Happy to be of service.

Roughly 7 hours; however, if you're coming in on a Friday night, you'll probably make better time as you should encounter less traffic (everyone will be heading out of the basin to Vegas or San Diego).

also, i do have the navi!
That's good, just in case some new fires spring up and you need to dynamically re-route.

I live ver close (about a mile away) where you are planning to meet.

Not sure what the weekend plans are yet but will try to make it.

I won't be able to meet. I'm going to fly out instead. My driving partner backed out and I can't be gone long enough to drive it alone. I still will be in Anahiem but won't have my own vehicle.

Too bad. You're so close. You sure you don't want someone to come get you to hang for a while. Sure it won't be as fun as if you had your own ride but if you want a ride to the meet leave me a PM and we can work something out.

It's a shame for you to be so close and not be able to go.

Nothing formal is planned as of yet. Just a chance to get together, meet, swap stories, and maybe get some grub.

This is just so us SoCal people can meet up and so that I can twist Tinky's arm into organizing a larger one in the near future. I want to show him there is an interest here south of LA.

It's maybe an hour at most from SD. I'm in North County myself.

Yeah well this was kind of last minute but we will take what we can get. Once it gets nicer we can try again and maybe more people will show up.

I don't understand it though, I see several people with SoCal in their locations yet I haven't heard a peep from them.

They'll probably be the first to complain later on.

Oh well. I still think even with 5-6 it will be cool. I'll have my cam there too.

I'm 30 but everybody tells me that I act more like 13.

No promises, but I'll try to be there.
8 hour drive from Visalia, I'd have to leave about 4am to get there by 12pm. I will play it by ear and try not to go out Sat.
