04 RL -- Now that OnStar is dead at the end of the year
can the overhead OnStar module be replaced with something more useful, like a sunglass holder, maybe from the 03?

Probably not worth the bother. Even if it was possible to replace the OnStar module, you would be looking at perhaps hundreds (or more) dollars at a minimum. That's just not worth the expense, IMHO just to keep OnStar.
If you would like to use the space for something else, I dunno, maybe try removing it and see would could fit there. The dealer might know if the space is interchangeable with something else.
