Jewel eye LED vs HID

Jewel eye LED vs HID
Hi, just wondering if any owner coming from a TL with HID finds improved night visibility with the Jewel eye? My TLX should arrive next week but I have not seen much information on the Jewel eye LED performance... thanks for sharing!

I feel that the LED's provide very broad, uniform, and low illumination. Plus, they should require less energy and have longer lifetime. And they look very high-tech too. Overall, very satisfied!

I just changed from TL SH-AWD to TLX. IMO the Jewel Eye offers superior visibility in very dark conditions. I am very happy with the result (the TLX and the lights!) Congrats on your TLX - you will LOVE it!

I feel the need...

I believe I read that they use 60% less energy than the HIDs. Quite significant.

We have them on our 2014 MDX and they are amazing. Especially if matched with the LED foglights.

I love the LEDs over the HIDs. I no longer need fog lights. The illumination is brilliant.
LEDs also looks cool and different.

Love my Jewel Eye LED! The lighting is bright, wide and uniform at night. Also, it looks darn good and pretty unique too... you know it's an Acura coming towards you :-)

I caught so much cap on the 4G side when I said the jewel lights are superior to the HIDs on the 4G, mostly by those that haven't experienced them yet and by a vendor that is pushing hid retrofit fog lights.

I sometimes do a lot of long distance driving at night, and I love the LED's on the TLX. I'm not sure how to describe it, but it's not a dingy light like my 3G's were, but rather a more clear/sharp lighting it provides. And that doesn't even go into the looks which I think are great, as well.

I really wanted to do a comparison by taking some pics at night with my 4G before trading it in for TLX. But didn't get a chance too. Jewel eye LED are definately whiter and seems brighter. In terms of distance i find both shoot around the same range. Width wise i find the HID scattered a little more light to the edges. But again i wasn't able to compare pics or videos... really wanted to post it up as i havent found any good comparisons online.

I was a bit apprehensive about the Jewel Eye since I was already very happy with the HID output. After three months in the TLX, I will say the Jewel Eye is far superior in terms of light output and visibility.

The light output seems to be brighterer, and the cutoffs are much crisper, and better defined. The highbeams make the road appear like you have giant search lights mounted to the front of the car. Definitely the best I have ever experienced.
Best visibility of any car I have had so far, but I have gotten flashed 2-3 times, so I am not sure if glare has increased.

The jewel eye headlights on the RLX are phenomenal. A great innovation for Acura.

Just picked up my elite Awd on Friday. Coming from a 2006 TL, this is really a good improvement on light performance. These LED's are super white and provide a much bette r light than the HID of the TL. Love it! Only thing is the fog lights don't provide any difference in output so if someone wants to add it to a base or tech model, don't do it doe additional light output - just for look.

I'm coming from a 2005 TL to the TLX AWD Tech and although I really like the new LED headlights, I was very impressed with the HIDs in the older generation. After 8.5 years and 140k miles, I never had to replace the HIDs. Pretty impressive.
On the other hand, what the LEDs provide is better efficiency in the overall power consumption of the vehicle. For instance, when using Idle Stop, you want as little load as possible on the battery when having to constantly keep restarting the engine with the lights on. The LEDs are a technological marvel. And, I really like the look of the Jewel Eye design. I think Acura did a great job.

My experience with the high beams in my TLX has been terrible on hilly roads. There is a sharp cut off of the beam which is so abrupt that there is virtually no illumination above the main light. As I am descending a hill I get to a point of not being able to see anything a use full distance ahead. The same problem happens when approaching an uphill. It is easy to out drive these lights as I get closer and closer to the rise in front.

One thing Acura has always been on the forefront of is headlight technology and making the technology acessible. The TLs from years ago came standard with HIDs at a time they were optional on high end cars. They were doing bi-xenons too. LED tail lights, same story.
Here with the TLX they made the jewel eyes standard across the board. This is the next generation up. Not as big of a difference from going halogen to HID but definitely a step up. It seems to be the way they do things with headlight and LED tail lights, no options, they just offer the best for everyone. I'm glad they stuck with that. In that way I don't think there is another manufacturer out there like it.
Now I'm waiting to see when they adopt laser headlights. Probably before most manufacturers, I'm sure.
