And looking back on it what a waste of money it was. She starred at it for a few months, we lost it in a lake up north (and found it) and now its like any other piece of jewelery. I should sell the rock replace it with Cubic Zerconia and put a down payment on a S2000. Oh well.

Yeah, it was dumb to spend that much.

An original John Gould etching of two seagulls for my wife. Gould is the "British John Audobon" and his work is incredible for its fidelity to details. I got it at a shop that was going out of business, but they sure knew what they had. More than my engagement gift to her which was NOT a rock, but a strand of perfectly matched, beautifully graduated in size pale pink pearls.

It was close to 2 carats, princess cut in a platinum setting. I don't remember the clarity and color, but they were high end as well. I figured I would get something really nice for her, as all she ever asks for gift-wise are electronics (which is like buying a gift for myself) and tickets to a hockey game.
Looking back on it, I could have spent more in the 10 K range and both of us would have been just as happy.

The ring is more worth it IMO. It shoudl be around forever and as you become more wealthy in your life you dont want your 50 year old wife wearing a highschoolers ring.

Not saying I'm going to return it but you'll see how soon she forgets about that rock on her finger. In fact she probly already has. And not many people spend more than a few thousand on enagaement ring. So I'd venture to guess there are alot of 50 something year old women with pebbles on there finger. Bet there just as happy though So how much did you drop?
And by go nuts on the Honeymoon I mean spending 6-8k which is probly what you were planning to spend anyway.

Interesting. Interesting.
I bought the ring right after the start-up company I was involved in was sold to a large company. Because I had been living on a grad student salary for so long, the bit of money I made off the start-up sale made me feel rich. So, splurging on the ring didn't seem like a bad idea. We also splurged on the honeymoon, because we both decided to make it a once-in-a-lifetime trip (it was to Fench Polynesia).
we are currently saving up to make it a twice-in-a-lifetime trip.

I bought my (now ex) bf a DVD burner for Christmas. It was a Plextor PX-712A which was a little over $200 at the time I bought it. He had a black computer and didn't like the colour (and wanted a dual layer burner), so I bought a Sony one for $99 (it was on sale from $150), and gave him that, and took the Plextor for myself.

I just don't want her to think I'm leasing her a ring that she gets to upgrade EVERY 5 years

$9k for the ring, and she gets compliments on it on a daily basis (she's basically a receptionist) and tells me she loves it all the time, a year later. Worth it, I guess, but I'll let you know after we're married.

I'll have to choose the original ring so it can take a bigger rock and use the original as a trade.
