Textual Harassment
While watching Dr. Phil today I discovered a new form of harassment. It's called textual harassment. Apparently, 24% of people 18-24 have suffered some sort of harassment by receiving a text message on their cellular telephone that is of a harassing nature.
I think this would be an easy issue to fix. You can block people from calling you, so you certainly must be able to stop people from texting you from that phone number. Furthermore, there would be evidence which you could use in a court of law right there on your telephone (not to mention through the telephone records).
Anyone here on AZ been harassed in this way?

+1 at above. Carriers can't block texts from specific numbers. It's all or nothing. Only thing is you can complain about the texts and keep it as a record to use in court but it'd have to be significantly harrassing like constant death threats or lewd texts for a judge to order a restraining order. And all carriers keep the text messages you send/receive so a subpoena by a judge can easily get those records.

I'm on Sprint and I can block texts. Either through my phone or managing my account on their website.

That is amazing. Could you guys tell me the name of the app?
Ken, I'm also on Sprint but in the past everywhere I've looked they've always said Sprint can't block texts from a specific number? Can you tell me how to do it? Haven't needed to yet but it'll be handy should the need arise.

Go to www.sprint.com
Log into your account. Click on the 'My Preferences' tab. At the bottom under Limits and Permissions, you'll see 'Block Text Numbers'

Any droid or iphone can download free apps to do this. I did it with an 800 number that was always calling me, but it works for texts too. I get text harassed by my ex still after being broken up for over a year, and not living together for 9 months or so. I could block them, but it's actually quite entertaining. I always turn my ringer off when I go to bed, so when she's drunk at the bar at 2-3 am and wants to lash out at me, I still get unloaded on. Couple weeks ago, I had 9 new texts, 3 missed calls, and a voicemail of our "song" from start to finish

Old Man Yelling at Clouds
I just wrote a paper on this for a class - well the larger topic was cyberbullying. You'd be amazed at the statistics. I'll have to go back for the precise numbers, but you are 2x to 3x more lilkely to be bullied on-line than you are in person. The paper I wrote centered around 7 suicides related to being bullied on-line. One of the cases was a mother impersonating a 15 year old boy just to harass a girl that had parted ways with her daughter. The girl who was the target suffered from depression, and ultimately the harassment led to her death. Sad stuff. No way to prosecute the mother either - she did not do any time. You'd be surprised at how few laws there are on this topic.
I have two teenage kids, and I'm amazed at what they deal with in the on-line world. We spend most of our time talking with them and coaching them on how to handle all this stuff. The way most kids treat each other on line is very different than how they treat each other in person.
