So whenever I am with girls and they come to me with some stupid problem that I find stupid I tell them that its dumb and they shouldn't be mad. Well that just gets them mad and they call me mean. How do you guys deal with wives and girlfriends who come to you with dumb problems?

 

The only way to deal with them is to just pretend you are listening so they think you care. They are really only venting and don't really expect you to solve their problems.

Yes, show empathy and listen.

However, if they're on the rag, I tell them to shut up and blow me.

 

When they call put them on hold, turn on the ps3 and mute the volume or set it very low. Take them off hold and every 1-3 minutes reply, "I understand" or "No it's not your fault" or "No, he/she is the one with the problem not you" or "Gee, you must have had a hard day" or "Of course, that dress would look fabulous on you" or "No, you don't look fat in a bikini", etc, etc, etc.

 

Learn to listen and do not try to fix. I am a fixer, so I always got into trouble when it came to shit like this.

 

I'm with everyone else. Just sympathize, but be careful about committing to an opinion. They'll remember. They're allowed to change their mind later and then you might find yourself with one more disagreement. So give them leading questions to let them work it out on their own.

...but I REALLY wanted to respond: "Just send them to D&R."

My wife has questions about problems sometimes, but I never find the problem to be a dumb one or one incapable of a proper solution.
Well, the rare exception might be where a dumb question involves comparing clothes-- then I just say both look good, but that she would look good in anything, or nothing. My dumb response is thus usually accepted without argument.

Just figured that out recently. Girls want to talk about their problems, but rarely want to actually do something about it. I used to try to offer suggestions of how to resolve the issue, but they don't want to hear that. They just want you to listen and take their side, that's it.

Well I handle different dumb questions differently.

 

"Do these shoes make my toes look funny?"

 

There's no such thing as a stupid question.... only stupid people who ask them.

 

Are you sleep? Can I talk to you for a minute? Do you still love me? Are you listening to me?

Not necessarily in that order...

 

"Can I ask you a question?"

Actually she called me crying from her house phone because she left her cellphone outside and it got rained on

So of course she is like "NOTHING IS GOING RIGHT!!!!!!!!! Everything is going wrong!!!!!"

Then I ask her how the hell that happened and then started to laugh because it was stupid. How does someone LEAVE a cellphone outside? Then proceed to tell her that its not that serious and she shouldn't be doubting your whole existence because of it.

She got mad and didn't talk to me for a week and a half and then called me upset that she missed me and how come I didn't call her. I was like "Meh you were mad and said not to call you, so I didn't" Then recently she was like "If I didn't call you back you would never have called me." I told her YEP!

 

Did she follow that up with "See, that's what I mean, you don't listen to me!" ??

 

Eh.. my wife left her cell on the front porch in the rain one night last month. I just laughed because everything works but the display and I'm not going to replace it until it completely stops working.

Back to you though--- don't take her so literally. You should call her back after a reasonable cooling-off period unless she means nothing to you.

 

The reason I asked is my GF can really ask some stupid questions.

Sometimes she just wants me to make up her mind. The other night we had an issue because after dinner we had leftovers and she was like "what do you want me to put this in?", I said "are you serious?" She said "yea" and got all mad. I just told her to put it in a bowl, or a plate, or any one of the dozens of plastic storage things I have. I mean WTF, just pick something. Those questions aggrivate me and I usually don't handle them well.

She also asks some really f'ing dumb questions about everyday things that get me annoyed like "when do we vote for vice president?", those things I try to be patient and explain. She is not really that dumb, but sometimes, it's like she is trying to be.

And for those times she asks things like , "do you like thses shoes?" I just tell the truth, either I like them, don't like them, or more often, that I have no feelings about them at all.

 

i hate when girls say to just take them home...then you do and they ask if youre really takin them home

 

i've come to realize she doesn't want me to fix what's wrong, she just wants me to console her and let her deal with it
just figured this out a few months ago, though i still have trouble doing it.

Just let her vent. She probably just wants to be heard. And if she brings it up again, she likely doesn't feel like she's been heard, so let her vent s'more. She's likely not looking to you to solve all of her problems, but at least wants you to know about 'em.

 

The first step is to never get in that position as it is - unless of course this is your "girlfriend" - not just girls that come to you

If im ever caught in that position, i usually just pretend to listen but really have other things racing on my mind...

If im caught in the "pretend to listen" mode and the girl picks up on it, i just tell her if she wants sympathy and consoling thats what her girlfriends are for...

 

Whenever they come to you with stupid ass questions, just do to them what Joe Pesci did to Sharon Stone on Casino. When she got in the car and was complaining to him about Robert De Niro...
