Ortho Tri-Cyclen

So my gf all of a sudden has been on edge and getting pissed out for the smallest things. I couldn't figure out why (besides that she's a girl) and the only thing I can think of is, that she just recently started this birthcontrol, Ortho Tri-Cyclen. Do girls get bitchy when they start this stuff? I'm stressin out cause of all the shit I'm getting.

My wife totally quit b/c. She tried 3-4 different ones, all of them were affecting her emotionally. We both hate raincoats, and the happy dance isnt as regular as clockwork like when on the pill. But... It is better than fighting.

I dont remember what it did to me personality wise, but physically the stuff made my PMS, cramps and all that happy stuff a million times worse, so I stopped using it.

Tell her to try Loestrin, or its generic.

I dont have any mood swings besides the normal effects of PMS.

Try suggesting a pill that is low in hormone levels and also one that has a consistent level of hormone throughout the month. "Tri" cyclen means that each of the 3 weeks in one month (not including the one with a period) means that the hormone levels are changing, which can exacerbate symptoms in some people. Keeping hormone levels the same works better for some people. I am on Yasmin, it's low level hormones and keeps the same level all month.

It's normal to have to search around and try a few different ones before finding one that works, so just be patient.

tell her to start taking it at night right before bed every day. if u take it in the morning it will really make a girl a super bitch. i know it sounds crazy but really get her to take it at night and it should all be good in a couple days!

Wow, I've never heard that.

Does it matter which birth control, or does it work for all?

im not sure about that. i just know it worked for me. as soon as i started taking them i had mood swings from hell..and my doc told me to take them at night and seriously it fixed it within a couple days. but as far as i know they are all pretty much the same medicine so it should work for any kind.

i can't take the pill....all three of my sisters can't take it either....it just fucked with our heads way too much, it seems to be a family thing with us (a couple of my aunts said that they didn't have good expereinces with the pill either)
i'm on the shot, which has a LOT of negative effects as well, but hey, the trade-off is worth it for me

I have been taking Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo (lower estrogen dosage compared to the regular one) for 3 years now and I haven't noticed any adverse effects. I don't think so anyway...

Gentlemen,

Two different kinds of oral contraceptives -- triphasic and monophasic. Tri-cyclen, as the name would imply, has 3 different sets of pills -- the pills gradually increase in hormones, which mimics the body's natural cycle. (Aside: birth control pills work by tricking the body that it is "pregnant" so it doesn't release an egg and makes the uterus not-friendly to accept a fertilized egg.) Most MDs go this route because that's how Mother Nature wanted it.

The monophasic pills have only 1 type of active pill. It has a slightly higher amount of hormones in it than the triphasics. These come as either combo (estrogen/progestin) or just progestin. Estrogen is linked with higher risk of blood clots. So, women with a previous history of blood clots (venous thromboembolism to the pre-med students) would go with progestin-only tablets. Thing is, it's only ~85% effective as a contraceptive versus >99% effective with combo pills.

Mood swings are somewhat common with birth control pills. The MD has to find one that suits the patient (thus, the reason why there is an abundance of choice). Lower dose contraceptives are associated with less side-effects. Tri-Cyclen Lo, Loestrin, Alesse (Canada), Marvelon (Canada) are common choices. Moodines can also be minimized with one called 'Yasmin' -- it has mineralcorticoid effects, so it can help with those who have bloating and acne associated periods.

Bottomline: see MD for other choices if patient can not tolerate Tri Cyclen.

PS Someone mentioned 'the shot' (aka Depo-Provera). It's a long acting progestin-only birth control. Women only get a period every 3 months. The catch: once it's in you, it's in you for 3 months. Some reports of huge mood swings as well as increased risk of osteoporosis, especially if started at a young age. It also takes a while (~3 months) before regular menstrual cycles begin.

once she's on it for a while longer she'll be fine. her body is just getting used to it. i haven't gotten mood swings though, so i'm probably not the best judge. also, the mood swings are now thought to be caused by the progesterone, not estrogen, component. (think: pregnant women's mood swings.)

be nice to her and give her a foot rub. she'll stop being cranky.

if you think she is a bitch while on the pill, go ahead and get her pregnant and see how much of a bitch she becomes.
