my sister is planning for her wedding later on this year, so much stuff and $$ involved, so I made the BF agree that if we ever get married (he says we will, I'm not holding my breath for it to be any time soon), that we can elope. Even his mom thinks its a good idea.

We got married last May. We had ~120 people and spent about $15k. That includes everything for the wedding, not just the reception.
We were very lucky and had alot of help from my dad and her parents, otehrwise we would have had to pay for it ourselves ad probably wouldnt have had such a big wedding.

lady wants something fancy. so we are lucky that her parents are picking it all up. I doubt I will ever know the full price, although we haven't started planning it yet. But based on the possible locations of the engagement party, i would guess it will be pretty ridiculous. Honestly, I would prefer something modest, but I'm just kind of along for the ride on this one.
I'm glad that her parents offered to do it all, i would feel really guilty having my parents pay for a one shot event, especially since the economy is taking a toll on them. I think they will end up just getting us a very nice gift, even though I told them please be reasonable.

We have a date set for April 24th 2010 and are planning as we speak. We are getting 20k from my fiancees parents to do what we want with it. We are figuring we can have about 150 people and still come out with about 5k left over.

My wife and I spent somewhere between 20-25k for our wedding. Once we started going over our initial budget, I stopped adding it up. We had about 125 people on a large yacht cruising around the harbor which is what made it as expensive as it was. That's actually a fairly small wedding for my family, but since we paid for all of it (other than the rehersal dinner my parents paid for), we cut out a lot of family friends and extended family.Don't forget that August can also equal hurricanes.

Yeah, I think the woman's family usually pays for the wedding here in the U.S. But if you're marrying an Asian, the guy's family is expected to pay.

that is the type of wedding i'd want. I can't see spending so much on a wedding. i'd rather have a small ceremony and an outdoor reception with friends and families almost bbq like, where everyone can just have a good time.

apparently nowadays, if the couple is already off living alone (as opposed to in previous generations where the girl goes from living with her parents to living with her husband), the tradition no longer dictates that the bride's parents pay. It is usually the couple that pays for their own, maybe with some help from the families (should be volunteered, not expected).

so what does the guy get?
apparently, we're expected to pay for a ring, wedding, honeymoon.
at least in korea, there's a custom of the bride's family buying the groom a watch.

Figured I could get it done for $15k...ended up spending <$20k total
Paid for by the 4 parents...all split except my father paid for the bulk of it ($10k)
The most was the reception w/ open bar for 140 people ($10k). Photography was next up ($3k). Everything else (Dress, Rehearsal dinner for out of towners (friggin 100 people showed!), Mariachis, DJ, Flowers, Honeymoon, Invites, Attendants gifts, favors, decorations, rings, cake, HD camcorder, gift bags for out of towners (most of the guest list ), part of the bachelor and bacherlorette party ($400 ea), etc) was under $7k. All that random shit added up quick. Oh...I also hired a friend to be the day of coordinator so I didnt have to worry about shit!
The whole experience...unbelievable. We had such an awesome time.

So let me get this right...
From now on I should reduce Asians to strictly fucking material, and if I want to get married again, my best options are Filipino, Indian, and white corn-fed women from Nebraska whose families don't know anything about the updated dowry changes?
I met a sister once who I was talking about this kind of thing with. She was telling me how she would want a big wedding. I said if I was the dude that married you, your father would have to pay for this because that's how it goes. That's the rules. She said ok, then I wouldn't have to discuss any of the arrangements with you. You just get your tux and show up. We dated a few times, it never worked out, she and I, but to this day I still don't know why she felt I would lose out in that agreement...Meh...

Guys think they don't want to help with the arrangements, but all of the guys I know are quick to complain when there is something they don't like. My BF complained so much about a wedding we went to, I asked that if when we get married he wanted to plan the wedding, and he said YES. I just want to elope. I suggested Drive-thru wedding chapel in Vegas, he told me no. So somewhere in between I guess. Not that it will be happening anytime soon.

We had some family friends who their daughter's wedding was around $25K and they divorced a little after a year.

We paid around $20,000 for ours. We had about 150 people attend. It's only one day of your life. Granted it will be one of the best days of your life and you should only do it once but don't spend like crazy. It's not necessary in my opinion. Good luck!

Been discussing a wedding with the bf lately. He wants to just elope or do it at the county clerk's office (or wherever you do it), but I want a small ceremony somewhere cheap like a nice garden or park, with just our parents, siblings + date, and 1 or 2 best friend and their wives/husbands. Then have a BBQ or some type of party with everyone else later on. I don't think I'm asking too much, but he's being terribly stubborn. I just want something more than getting married in a government office - I want it to feel like the special day that it is, and I don't want to regret not having some type of ceremony.

Got married in Nov. of 2007 in Hawai'i [Big Island]. It was overlooking the ocean at sunset. Outdoor reception. Under 15 people - only close family and friends.
Mom and dad says the total was <$15,000 and that includes almost everything. They paid for the wedding + hotel charges for us for 2 weeks and everything else but airfare and food during the honeymoon. We paid for airfare, but they upgraded us to first right before we left as a surprise.

she wanted a small wedding ceremony/reception with immediate family members and close friends only. he wanted to just elope. she didn't because she wanted to celebrate the occassion with the people she loved.
they ended up getting officially married at the courthouse and having a party afterwards (dinner, etc) as a compromise.

for just the wedding in 2005 it was close to 15k, that included Everything, except the engagement ring. I think the wifes' family kicked in about 1k total towards the cost of the wedding. we paid the rest.
We used a 0% cc to charge about 9-10k. The wedding gift $ paid half that and the rest we paid before the interest rate kicked in.
Our honeymoon was in vermont at my aunt/uncles place, so that saved us about 1500 on hotel/condo rates. We had saved our change for a couple years and used that towards food and other activities when we were there. I think we had a little over $900 saved for that from our change.

I want my girls parents to pay for the wedding since they're lucky enough I'm marrying their daughter, and also to provide a nice place for our honeymoon so I can bang the hell out of their daughter in comfort.

That seems like the least they should do for all the joy and superior genetics you're bringing to their family.

Yikes..
I've got the catering estimation right now..
$19 a person
Approximately 280 people at this point
$5380
And I'm sure this will keep on going up.
