How to break things off nicely?

Every time I date a girl for an extended period of time and I am ready to end things, they always end on a bad note. I either ignore her all together or become an asshole. I am dating a girl right now and I'm ready to end things, this time though I would like things to end on a good note. I want to try the alternative route of not being an asshole but I'm not sure how.

Current girl is fun and all but the negatives are outweighing the positives...
Her birthday was yesterday and I didn't buy her anything (she likes expensive gifts...) and I can't stand talking on the phone as much as she likes to.

So how do I end this without being an asshole?

i dont think there is a nice way to end things unless is a mutual agreement with both people. i guess the best way is to tell her how you feel and apologize like eggplant-ex said. its gonna be hard for her b/c yall was together for an extended period of time.

The old-fashioned cliche way is to invite her to a fine restaurant and give her the news that you are breaking up about the time that desert and coffee are being served; the presumption is that she will not make a "scene". Didn't work for a friend of mine, who left the restaurant wearing the better part of a carafe of coffee.

There really isn't a good way, there are just the least bad ways... Tell her it is not working for you, you are breaking it off so that you can both move on with your lives to discover more meaningful relationships and that your breaking up with her is not a value judgement of who she is..... just a misfit.

Then let go of it

Tell her you want a "break" and then just go out and date other girls. Tell her you need some thinking and after a while just tell her that you don't wanna get back together.

Hey, if that's how they do it to guys, you might as well do it too. Do you think she would care if she didn't like you anymore? They're MONSTERS!

I did that once, before we even ordered. But we had only been dating for two weeks...just the same she started to cry and ran out...

It felt...so...Sienfeld.
