I got some scallops a couple weeks ago that were the size of baseballs. Those things are damn near impossible to cook properly at home, but they are fantastic when done right.

Hrm...Like Caliadria, I thought "ahi" referred to a species of tuna...? If I'm not mistaken, I remember reading awhile back in a cookbook that it refers to the yellowfin and bigeye fishes...

EDIT:
Here's a link about ahi: http://www.hawaii.gov/dbedt/seafood/yellowfin.html

"Ahi" means Tuna in Polynesian. It can apply to any species, so far as I know. Wikipedia pretty much backs that up.

I don't eat most seafood and haven't found many fish I actually like. Yellowtail is what I'll usually grill - end up getting frozen steaks from Trader Joes. They aren't the reddest steaks, but the taste and texture is usually fine. Every once in a while, I'll get high grade fresh yellowtail from a fish market.

Some interesting info on Ahi and more specifically on yellowtail relating to previous discussions:
http://www.hawaii.gov/dbedt/seafood/yellowfin.html

They had a store in Orange, but it closed fairly recently. Was only opened for a few years.
That is a great link. It mentions that Yellowfin is "much firmer" than other Tuna species... perhaps this why the Tuna I cook at home is "much firmer" then what I find in restaurants.

I think I've always used Yellowfin.

I'm going to try some Bluefin and Albacore. No idea where to get Bigeye?

Is there a large fishmarket in Albany that you can get to...? Your Chinatown may have one...

There's only one I know of with a large variety, but it's hit or miss whether you'll find what you're looking for... and if it's any good.

We don't have a Chinatown (they bulldozed it in the 70's to build state offices), although, the local Chinese community has been struggling to establish a new Chinatown through investment towards a new "Chinese mall" downtown. Unfortunately, the developers ripped everyone off and skipped town with millions...

Nevertheless, yeah, we have asian markets with fresh fish... but they scare me. They look soo unsanitary! I guess I'll give it a try though.

Ah...yeah, give those a shot. As a rule of thumb for Asian establishments (even restaurants too), don't judge it by its cover (some of the tastiest places I know of are dumps )...

And let your nose and eyes be your judge before you buy the fish. You may be surprised...!

I'll partially agree. The asian market we go to has some good fresh fish, but their meats a kind of iffy. Also, their sanitation practices leave much to be desired. Nothing really disgusting, but going from between different meats without worrying about what they touch. And when they hand you the bag of meat or fish, they use the hand that handled the meat/fish. Come to think of it, that is pretty digusting.

If by "cooking" you mean "searing the outside" then I'm with you.

You might want to post this in one of the 5 or 6 steak threads.

I think it may have already been covered in one.

You'd never guess it by looking at it, but House of Chan on Eglington has some of the best (if not the best) steak in the city. Barbarians is not bad either.

But honestly, for every day dining, you cant go wrong at the Keg on york street (dont laugh). Decent prices, and consitantly good steak. It has to be the york street location though, or maybe the keg mansion on church.

Finished my tuna with a nice bottle of white wine. Not bad, but it was my first time searing tuna on my indoor grill. Next time will be better.

Ya that "tuna noodle casserole" I mentioned earlier was no good. Stouffer's frozen meals for the un-win.

Have not heard of house of chan or barbarians, but I will look into them.

Im not laughing at the Keg ,....I have had some good steak at the Keg before (and not so great). Like you said, it all depends on location. In fact, one of the best meals I have ever had was at the Keg in Niagara falls (its part of some suites hotel something or other - elevator up to the restaurant part). Fantastic view, and the food was very good. I got some special thing on the menu (was not a reg thing),........OMG it was good.

Anyway, thanks fdl.

Question for the seafood eaters out there: what's the most exotic seafood you've had (i.e. geoduck, sea urchin, puffer fish)...?

seafood, but i could NEVER give up meat.

But then again, if you made me choose between like beef and just lobster or any other individual seafood, i'd have to take beef. There are just so many different kinds of seafood and only really a few major types of meat, and each type of seafood is very versitile. You can eat it raw....or uhm............raw.............well you get the point.

But meat is a hell of a lot cheaper, and easier to make. My college budget doesn't allow for much seafood in my diet.
