Cleaning the BBQ

Breaking out the BBQ today as the weather here is finally amazing and wondering if anyone has any good ways of cleaning the grill?

I read that cutting an onion in half and scrubbing it on the grill as the fire is on is a very good method, anyone tried it or would like to suggest another method?

Thanks

I usually just wire brush the heck out of the cooking surface, and scrape out any excessive crud so I don't get flare ups (had a nice fire going last year).

Last year I pressure washed the inside of mine. Worked pretty good. Hopefully that's not a bad thing to do

I usually clean w/ vegetable oil prior to cooking fish...gets it clean and prevents sticking...

There is this spray, Zep Oven and Grill cleaner you can get at Home Depot. Its basically a metal degreaser that works like an oven spray. I use it once a year. You just take the grills out, spray it on, let it sit and blast it off with a hose and it gets rid of all the crud. Stuff is pretty potent, dont spray it on any painted surfaces.

And if you have a stainless steel grill, 3m makes a great SS cleaner and polish...

Sounds painful for the dog.

The care of the cooking surface depends on what it is - cast iron, stainless steel, porcelain, etc. Weber has a pretty good guide to grill cleaning/care on their website.

For those cleaning with a wire brush, check the grill before putting the food down. There were a few cases here a few years ago of people swallowing a bristle that had nestled its way into a hamburger. They ended up in the hospital.

Put a piece of aluminum foil, shiny side down, on the grate. Blast it for about 10-15 mins with all burners on "HIGH". This will turn anything on the grate into ash which will come right off using a wire brush.

Heat that sucker up as hot as it gets....like a self cleaning oven does....then use crunched up aluminum foil like Pug said....or a good quality brass brush. No bacteria will survive the heat...and the crud turns to ash...easy to clean. Forget the oven cleaner....you don't want chemicals on your grill. Soap takes too long.
