Are they different things? My xbox live expired and I was about to renew it, but now I'm having 2nd thoughts since I'll have 360 in a few weeks and won't use regular xbox anymore.

Anyone know if they are seperate subscriptions or if my xbox live counts for 360...?

xbox website sells two seperate subscriptions, one for 'original xbox' and one for 360... same price though.

.. if you currently do not have an Xbox Live accont, and have an Xbox, you should get the Xbox live subscription.

if you currently have an Xbox Live account, you won't need to change anything once you get your 360.

it should work.. its juss call gold now.. its the same... the silver one is the "free" one but then again its not subscriptions then haha

 

Just like Sony has recently made games for the PS1, Microsoft and other developers will still make content already in progress. A good example is 25 to Life which is supposedly shipping in Jan. (Read: Spring 06).

Everyone that has a 360 will have xbox live 'Silver' I think. This is free and basic, just to play online and download content. Xbox live 'Gold' will have expanded friend capabilities, avatars, etc. The accounts are supposed to roll over with no problem, allowing everyone to carry over their friend lists.

In addition Microsoft has rolled out a new ranking system that is:

You can transfer your account seamlessly. You can actually transfer it now through Xbox.com http://www.xbox.com/en-US/live/ or calling their customer service when you get the 360. Here is info from MS:

Q:I have a Live membership that expires next year, but I don’t use anymore will it transfer automatically to 360 Live or do I have to do something?

A: Live memberships will transfer over from Xbox Live to Xbox Live 360 seamlessly. If you have an active Live membership now don’t worry about it.


Unfortunately not 100% true. You can only play online games having Xbox Live Gold. While there will be some free weekends for Silver subscribers, Gold is required for most online play. Here is the info from the Xbox site:

my bad. missed the expired part. was reading it quick from work as i was leaving. But as you can see you can just do it now. And when 360 comes out, you will automatically have the GOLD. Or since you are getting it now, it can be the called the Gold already. But no difference from xbox live now to the 360.
