XBOX 360 breaking discs?

Has anyone ever had this issue with their 360? A couple of weeks ago I put in PGR3 for my son to play, then I noticed the disc wouldn't load. After trying for a while I finally took out the disc to examine it and noticed there was a crack in the center of the disc. Thinking my son must have done it, I just went to the store and bought a used copy for $7.

Just a few minutes ago I put in GHII and got the same problem. Again I examine the disc and AGAIN another crack in the center. I know it couldn't have been my son because I put all my games up when I leave for work in the morning.

I am thinking the console must be doing this, and no way in hell I'm paying another $40 for GHII again. I guess I'll just do without, it sucks because I really liked that game.

Has anyone else had an issue like this, and is there someway I can get a replacement for a nominal fee?

I haven't heard that one.
I have, however, heard that if you move the 360 around while a disk is in it, then the disc can get really scratched up. Even if it is off - it just gets off center and when it spins up next time, it gets messed up.

Is your 360 standing up or laying on its side? If its standing up, thats your problem.

Never heard of the disc breaking thing, but I did move the X360 once while playing a game like an idiot, and I scratched my disc. Luckily I was able to exchange it.

Nah it's always been horizontal. I think vertical is kinda :ghey:

But anyway Microsoft is sending me another coffin to replace this XBOX (2nd replacement in a year). They also said they can only replace PGR3 since its their game. But basically told me I am SOL for GHII and told me to contact RedOctane. But RedOctane wants $25 dollars to get a replacement, better than $40, but I shouldn't have to pay a damn thing.

I did some research on the net, and discovered that other people are also experiencing their XBOX's cracking their CD's in the exact same manner mine were cracked. I guess I'll have to start purchasing stupid warranties on my game CD's now since Microsoft isn't going to do anything about them breaking. I have to cover my a$$ because these games aren't cheap!

Yep, I think its between $3 and $5 at the Gamestop stores here. It's a shame that I am going to have to start doing this, but I figure paying $5 now is a hell of a lot better than paying $40 - $60 down the road..

The 360 is currently made with 4+ different DVD drive manufactures. All of them fit DVD's differently there is mild play in all of them thats how DVD drives work, if your 360 is horizontal it really doesn't matter but when its vertical and the game/DVD wobbles a little off of center it clips the reader causing scratches. If the game already has a substantial scratch in it when it hits it will sometimes crack the disc.

Most likely your new console wont crack any discs, but will eventually scratch more games if you leave it standing up. But hey, some people haven't had any problems.

^^^See? that's what I hate, why can't they just use the same drive manufacturer for ALL their consoles instead of having four+ manufactuers who do things differently? I guess that would explain why other have had their 'boxes for years without this issue. My regular XBOX was the same way, I had a POS Thompson drive that started giving me issues, I then switched it out with a samsung (or philips; really can't remember) and hadn't had any problems since.

Looking at that picture it looks like maybe the reader itself is for whatever reason making contact with the disc while its starting to read causing it to crack. That could explain why my two discs are broken in the exact same place (from the center). The pictures of broken games I have seen online are broken in the same spot as well. I wonder if those guys who also have broken discs have the same drive manufacturer as me.

Microsoft was quick to offer to repair/replace it, which makes me think maybe they know about this issue already and trying to keep hush about it. The first thing I asked the rep was if he ever heard of 360's breaking discs and he said he didn't. He said he was going to transfer me to a supervisor, but then when he got back on the phone after talking to his supervisor, he was very quick to offer to repair/replace it.

Yea, MS has surprised me a lot with the 360. They're not one to usually admit any type of mistake or take responsibility, but they have stepped up their service this year.

They have cut all ties with faulty DVD drive manufactures and have offered free year warranty extensions for the 3 red lights.

And if you have an older console they will fix any overheating consoles/gpu's

Are you serious? It took them forever to finally fess up to the RROD issues and offer everyone an extended warranty. They fucked up and they knew it, yet it took literally thousands of complaints before they “finally” fessed up.

Even the “new and improved” consoles with the falcon chip have been RRODing Yea M$ finally fessed up but they knew the system was faulty from the beginning and apparently they still have their head up their asses since its still RRODing.

That’s why I bought mine at Costco. Lifetime warranty FTW. Screw trying to do any kind of returns through M$.
