Xbox 2: Xmas 2005 debut??

Xbox 2, Xbox Xenon, Xbox 360, they don't know what it's going to be called, but it may be out for Xmas 2005!!!

I personally don't see what the problem is, they could just release it now. Use the same box and controllers, just swap out the CPU, mobo, RAM, and video with current technology....

XBOX 2 FOR CHRISTMAS 05!

Xenon, 360, whatever...to hit before Xmas 2005 on both sides of the Atlantic

11:09 Hats and indeed everything else off to UK retail mag MCV this morning as its cover story loudly proclaims: "New Xbox in for Xmas".
Boldly stating "Microsoft is on course for a dramatic end-of-year roll out in the west" MCV goes on to say that the next generation Xbox will hit before Christmas 2005, with an almost simultaneous release in the West. The US will get Xbox 2 first, followed by a European debut within weeks. And the source of this story? Well MCV is quoting "senior US retail sources".

To dedicated Microsoft watchers this is hardly earth-shattering news though as all the signs, hints and portents have been heading that way, given Microsoft's vow to be first to market in the next gen and tactically realising the advantage Sony had with PS2.

It's thought Microsoft has publicly been saying little on its new console for fear of harming current generation sales.
However MCV is the first to break the omerta and publish the release date as cold hard fact. Listen closely and you'll probably hear the distant sound of Microsoft execs' blood slowly boiling.

Microsoft's UK press office was unavailable for comment at the time of writing, however we hope it'll get back to us with an official "No comment on rumours and speculation" before too long.

Umm no.

The public name is not confirmed, but the codename is Xenon (old XBox cost reduction was called Argon).

There's a LOT more changed than just the mobo, etc. You've got a brand new CPU (based on PowerPC design), new power requirements, new graphics cores, new controllers, new storage means, etc. etc.

Basically it's like building a laptop platform. Even Intel can't do that faster than 1.5 years.

Everything I've seen so far is a July manuf. ramp date, leading to a September/October availability. Beyond that who knows when they will actually release it. However, I would guarantee that it'll be availabel for the Xmas buying season during Thanksgiving.

XBOX 2 TECH DETAILS REVEALED IN PATENT?

...but they make about as much sense as a fish up a tree. Come inside and hurt your brain...

12:24 While it seems that Sony, Toshiba and IBM are about to unveil a whopping 4.6 Ghz processing chip for PS3, we've been rather left in the dark as to the computing muscle that'll benchpress heavy chunks of code in Microsoft's Xbox 2.

But we do know graphics tech firm ATI has signed to work on the next-gen beast's chips, so every little nugget of news concerning the company twitches our speculation nerve.

Well, here's something that should make your brain melt and dribble out of your ears like pink pus. ATI has filed a patent that could possibly, maybe, potentially have something to do with the chip technology planned for Xbox 2 - if only we could work out what it means.

Tech website The Inquirer uncovered the patent, which describes a "Method and apparatus for determining a processing speed of an integrated circuit". That's the idea, here's a sample line from the explanation of the idea: "a first flip flop having an input port receiving an input signal, an output port providing a flip flop output signal and a timing port receiving an incoming clock signal."

As far as we're concerned flip-flops are those scabby slabs of foam that keep your stinking feet cool in summer, but we're informed that in the technical sense they're actually transistors, the basic building blocks of circuits. Does that help?

Even The Inquirer is flummoxed, although it speculates that the patent suggests ATI are working to get standard processing working on the same chip as dynamic logic - a more complicated processing procedure that operates at much higher speeds. The patent could describe a system to switch speeds between these two processing modes. Which is evidently a good thing as it enables more calculations to be done quicker, resulting in graphics so detailed, smooth and fast that they'll destroy your soul.

But, to be honest, we've consulted our tech experts and they're not convinced that the patent describes anything of much interest. So we're throwing this riddle open. If you've got a degree in Complicated Computer Technology Jargon Smashing from the University of Massive Brains, you can find the full text of the patent here . Decipher it and tell us what it means in the forums below. Thanks.

ACTIVISION'S XBOX 2 LINE-UP REVEALED...

Is this the list of the big A's Xbox 2 launch games?

12:15 Xbox 2 - or Xenon as we should now properly call it - is drawing ever closer with the first public showing rumoured to be either March's GDC (less likely on the form book if the current rumour mill is to be believed) or more likely the big jamboree that is E3 in May.

With the smart money now on a release before Christmas 2005, it's no surprise to find that major publishers are already up to their armpits in plans for the launch of Bill's big - though apparently not black - box, part two.

Well, following news of EA's plan for Need For Speed: Most Wanted and a host of other launch titles, news comes to us today of Activision's plans for the Xbox part deux.

Speaking on condition of strict anonymity, a well placed source confessed to us that he has received information on the following list of Activision games which are slated for Xbox 2. Hold your breath Xbox fans, cos here we go:

Quake 4
Tony Hawk's Underground 3
Ultimate Spiderman
Call of Duty 2

When we put this to Activision, a spokesperson said: "We do not comment on matters of rumour and speculation."

So while it's difficult to be 100 per cent sure of the info, we think the tip certainly has the ring of authenticity. Our source also suggest that the titles are currently pegged to retail at $59.99, which if a little steep, certainly bears out remarks from leading industry figures that next generation games will force you to dig deeper into your pockets.

Viewed objectively, all four titles are continuations of major franchises which Activision would be almost insane not to launch onto next-generation consoles.

Look at that line-up and think how saucy it would be to find Quake 4 as a launch title, backed up Call of Duty 2, THUG 3 and one of the biggest sellers of last year, Spider-Man.

An A-list line-up like that from a major publisher like Activision will also certainly add even more weight to Microsoft's arm if, as our source suggests, they'll be ready for the Xbox Xenon's launch.

More on this one as we have it, but remember where you read it first.

XBOX 2 BECOMES XBOX 360?

Internet rumours reckon Microsoft has gone full circle in its quest for a name for the next-gen Xbox

10:59 Xbox 2? Xbox Next? Xbox Xenon? We've all got our favourite codename for Microsoft's next-gen version of the Xbox, but no-one knows for sure what the final version will actually be called.
Now a new contender has chucked its hat into the ring. According to internet rumours, Xbox 360 is the new hot favourite moniker for Bill Gates' big box of dreams.

Tech website Engadget is reporting that it has received insider info from a source privy to Xbox 2 (or whatever...) packaging, logos and documentation that points to Microsoft having settled on the rather elongated Xbox 360 tag.

It seems that Microsoft has been a little concerned that calling the machine Xbox 2 would make it sound a generation behind PS3 - and positively lightyears behind the Nintendo N5, an early codename for what has now become the Nintendo Revolution.

Engadget even points to evidence that a marketing study last year asked consumers whether they thought Xbox 360, PS3 or Nintendo N5 sounded more cutting-edge.
Further speculation points to the notion that the 360 tag suggests a full circle of home electronic entertainment, which would certainly fit in with Mr Gates' plans TO OWN YOUR SOUL... sorry, we mean offer you all the domestic fun you could ever want in your living room.

Of course, Microsoft itself is keeping its lips shut tighter than a camel's bumhole in a sandstorm. "Microsoft does not comment on internet rumours and speculation," came the predictable reply when we enquired as to the validity of Xbox 360. "It's all good fun, though..." continued the spokesperson, which we wholeheartedly agree with.

From our end, Xbox 360 is a new one to us. In fact, we've heard whispers recently that Xenon, one of the earliest codenames mooted for the next Xbox, was regaining popularity as the final choice.

As with so many things in life it looks like we'll just have to wait and see. We'll keep you up to date, but in the meantime why not tell us your favourite Xbox 2 nom de plume - or make up your own - in the forums below.

XBOX 2 IS 'UNBELIEVABLE', SAYS MICROSOFT CEO

Well, he would say that, wouldn't he? Steve Ballmer gets all excited (again) inside...

12:21 Big bad Steve "I LOVE THIS COMPANY!" Ballmer, Microsoft's CEO and skilled motivational speaker from the David Brent School of Dance and Embarrassing Enthusiasm, has spoken of how Xbox 2 is an "amazing innovation."
Speaking to a bunch of schoolkids attending a visit to Microsoft's sprawling Redmond, Washington State headquarters, Ballmer got all worked about how amazing Xbox 2 is going to be: "When you see the new Xbox, you're going to think it's - well, let me say it politely - unbelievable. Just unbelievable. The graphics, what it can do, the way things look, we're talking huge innovation."

When asked how Xbox 2 would shape up against Sony's PS3 and Nintendo's Revolution, Ballmer responded emphatically. "I think we're going to blow by Sony with our next Xbox, he said. "At the moment there's Sony, there's Nintendo, and there's us. When we get Xbox 2 in the market, there's going to be Xbox and 'the other guys'."

Ballmer also made a few suggestions about the type of game we can expect on Xbox 2. "We have to make sure we have a great software environment for people to write games, games that connect to one another, games that are social and games that are hardcore. We've got to make sure we let people write great games."

What kind of great game? "What is Halo 2?" asked Ballmer. "It's the greatest video game ever written. We've got some more games coming that will be the greatest video games ever written, and they'll show off Xbox 2."

Is that a clue that Halo 3 is headed for Xbox 2? It would make sense, especially since it looks increasingly likely that Xbox 2 will be available before the end of this year.

Ballmer rounded off his discussion with a teasing nod to Xbox 2's rumoured unveiling at E3. "Rumours are that we'll see that product sometime soon. I couldn't comment, of course, on those rumours. But it's an amazing, amazing innovation."

So while we're no further forward with concrete info on Xbox 2 at least we can rest safe in the knowledge that Steve Ballmer thinks it's going to be the nuts.

Why should you trust him? Because this man is a genius who will forever live in our fondest memories for this performance at a Microsoft corporate event. What a guy.

XBOX 2'S WIRELESS SECRET

Xbox Next controller will be wireless...

17:36 Has tech hound website The Inquirer got a secret line to Uncle Bill or maybe a bug planted in his back pocket? Ah no it's those pesky Xbox partners who've blown the lid again on another Xbox 2 exclusive - or at least that's what The Inquirer is claiming.
This week's revelation? Well it's that Xbox 2, Next, Xenon or 360 (delete as appropriate) will feature controllers which are wireless as standard. Marvellous of course if true and it certainly does make a lot of sense given how annoying and dangerous those longer-than-long Controller S leads usually are.

It is rather too easy to trip over when drunk and take a header straight through the telly at crucial beer refuelling moments. We've lost several widescreen models and not a few brain cells already that way.

Okay so perhaps it's not the all-consuming, earth-shattering revelation you'd expect, but hey it lightens up a rather long Wednesday afternoon in the current graveyard of Xbox 2 news.

Xbox 2 we salute your potential wireless controller future. Hurrah!

Well it'll definitely be released by Christmas. A friend of mine works for Bethesda software and they are working on several games that will be coming out on Xbox 2 (or whatever it'll be called) he said these games will be out THIS year.

good point... it will be nice to see what PS can do against the Xbox, on the same playing field (PS3 vs. Xbox2). As you know, Xbox1 is ~2.5 times as powerful as the PS2...

i don't quite understand why people like or dislike a system because of who makes it. what's wrong with liking the system because of what it offers?

i loved the PS2 when it came out. when the xbox came out, i jumped ship because the xbox was an overall better system (to me). if it turns out that xbox2 kicks ass, i'll get it and if ps3 blows it away, i'll buy me one of them too.

who cares who makes it?

i can care less about Microsoft or Sony (i like Apple products tho)...i only use what i like and need. true the Xbox is a more powerful system but the PS2 make it up on mass list games. i would wait tho. Sony got something planned out. Microsoft is just trying to beat Sony on releasing a system in 2005 even tho the xbox came out after the PS2. but all the good stuff gonna be coming out later this year

no, I'm saying it's personal preference. You choose a certain car for certain reasons and preferences, that fit your needs and desires, just as you choose a certain gaming system to fit what you want and like. Sometimes, even the name can influence your decision-making...

like for me, as an example, I felt I had enough suitcases sitting at home already, and so I didn't get an Xbox. ok I'm joking now.

You are such a Sony Fanboy sometimes... I will be getting both systems personally. I support the Xbox more lately because I like it more now, but I still respect Sony and the PS2.

BTW,

IBM, Toshiba, Sony = Cell Processor. At the hightest level, it's a PowerPC chip with 8 vertex units on top of it. Sony and Toshiba built the Emotion Engine (the PS2 processors). It should be a very sweet CPU, but Sony still had to hire NVidia to produce a GPU for the PS3.

So it's Sony, IBM & NVidia vs Microsoft, IBM & ATi

Should be an interesting set of consoles

It's funny watching "BREAKING XBOX 2 NEWS" with stuff I knew about 3-4 months ago.

I like knowing stuff other mere mortals can only guess at!

I'd also like to confirm wireless controllers. I've been working on part of the design of that group of peripherals.

Should be an interesting set of consoles
yes I'm a Sony fanboy. I admit. I'm not sure how it happened... I blame Gran Turismo.

damn, I would assume you work for Microsoft then.... ... that being said, damn, we the buying public are only 3 to 4 months off of breaking news over there? that ain't too bad. I would have thought for such a high profile project as Xbox2, you would have known about it like, a year ago...

I don't work at Microsoft. I work for a vendor supplying hardware parts TO the MS Xbox group. So it's filtered somewhat. They don't tell me everything.

And remember that the final specs aren't even there for XBox2. They're still moving things around. Actual production doesn't start until June/July. Things are still pretty well finalized, but there could be things dropped at the last minute that don't work out or are too expensive when the numbers are tallied.
