Which Video Card to Buy??

I have a Nvidia 6800 w/256. Looks like Company of Heroes wants something better. I'm running a 3.6 with a gig of ram. Ordered another gig ram today.

Going to stay with Nvidia card. What are you guys running?

Thanks

Actually if you check out the forums for the game they recommend the cardForum

You may want to give it a whirl with your card and then replace it if need be.

Thanks, for the link. They recommended the card that I have. When I did a performance test (the one within the Company of Heroes) at the highest resolution 1600x1050 and one below is said my card was poor for fps 0.7fps was the average. So I think it's time to upgrade.

Just wondering what everybody else is using?

^^ If you go to http://www.crucial.com/ they have a plug-in that will tell you what you have and could use, pci, pci express , agp, etc.

I ended up going a GeForce 7900GS 256mg, I got it from newegg.com for $200.00.

Crazy88, do you have a laptop or is that the built in chip on a PC? Many laptops don't give you an option to upgrade the video card as most are built in. Tell us what type of machine you have - Brand/Model etc.

And

Go here:

Right Click on My Computer - Click on Properties - Select the Hardware Tab - Select Device Manager - click on the plus (+) symbol next to Display adapters and tell us what you see there.

I have a Dell Dimension E310 PC

I see "Intel(R) 8215G/GV/910GL Express Chipset Family"

I went to www.crucial.com, and according to their site, I can upgrade my video card.

And if my computer has built in video card, how would I upgrade?

Thanks for your help

It's easy: just buy a new one that fits in the slot and turn off the on-the-motherboard video through the Control Panel. My board has a built-in sound card and I turned it off, running a much better 7 channel M-Audio card.

That resolution is overkill. You really don't need to run the game at that spec... unless you have money to burn.

Of course that would be a non-PCI-E(xpress) card. Not sure if there is much out there for the standard PCI motherboard the E310 has. GeForce 6200?

For the $$ and performance I'd get a X1900XTX ATI Card. I paid $299 for one recently.

I play all of my games at 1680x1050 16:10, they play awesome even with everything cranked up. My HL2 with dynamic lighting enabled it is around 100FPS at this resolution. With it turned out it's 150FPS (everything else cranked up).

This is a good reference to use to compare video cards...

Not money to burn, top of the line cards of there now running $600-$1000. I got a 7900GS from newegg.com for $200 and it's doing the trick, average fps is now over 30.

With a 16:9 monitor a needed something a little better than the bottom of the barrel 6800, that's almost 2 years old.

Don't be just know that when you shop for video card you cannot get the PCI-Express cards people here are talking about. You have to stick with plain old PCI - the 6200 cards are probably the best you can do.

Ahh thanks for the help.

So the Dell E310 is PCI. I found a 6200 card with 256mb. Would I be able to run two of these, and would setting everything up be harder if i did that? Also do brand names matter?

btw-what does 6200 mean?

6200 is GeForce's naming convention - never learned there reason for it. You can only set up one 6200 card so get the 256MB one. Don't worry about the brands. If you are into gaming you will need to seriously think about upgrading soon. Only the newer PCI-E with a feature called SLI or Crossfire can run two cards.

Ahh sorry for all my questions, but would I need a low profile card or a standard card, cuz whats already in there looks low profile.(if thats the graphic card)

Good question, all I ever had to do with the integrated chip systems was install the card and plug in the monitor and the right drivers - then voila, working new video card

If you can shut it off you would do this... when your comuter boots hit "del" "f10"... whatever key to get into the BIOS Setup menu. In there you should find an "integrated peripherals" section where you can disable the internal video card.
