USB 2.0 help...

I have XP Pro OS w/ service pack 2 installed. My motherboard is a brand new gigabyte w/ 8 USB 2.0 ports...4front/4rear. I have a western digital dual back-up option external hard drive...160gb drive. now...everytime I plug it in...it says that there are no USB 2.0 ports on my computer so it will run at a slower speed. I've done all my windows updates and everything. I've even went into device manager and updated all my drivers for all of my usb ports...however they all say that the most current driver is installed allready. So I go into driver details for the Western Digital HD USB port and the driver details say that the driver is a microsoft driver from 2001...I know this can't be the correct driver for USB 2.0. MY question is....how do I know exactly if I have the correct driver installed for USB 2.0 and how do I know if it's working properly????

Where are you plugging it in?

If you are using front panel USB Ports, beware that some Cases' Front panel ports are driven by a very cheasy mini USB Hub Chip and will often drop to USB1 speeds if the case is a tad older.

if plugging it into the back on one of the Mobo ports doesnt solve the problem, then I would look into drivers as mentioned by others here. But its easy to check if XP Sees them as USB2 or not.

Open Device Manager
Scroll to bottom and hit + on USB
If you have one that says Blah Blah Blah Enhanced Host Controller, then you have at least a few USB2 ports in your machine.

casper is right it has to say enhanced driver. some motherboards have usb all over it and not all of them are 2.0. you will have to find out which one is and which ones isn't. if your machine does not say enhanced host controller go to the motherboard manufacturer and try to download the latest driver for the motherboard(not the bios or firmware). motherboards will also have chipset drivers for the OS so ports like USB, IDE and firewire will be working.
