Sony slashes PS3 price
NEW YORK (AP) -- Sony on Thursday cut the price of its PlayStation 3 game console in the U.S. and announced an even cheaper model that will arrive before the holiday shopping season.
The top-line PlayStation model, with an 80 gigabyte hard drive, now costs $499, down from $599. That effectively eliminates the lower-end model, which has a 60-gigabyte drive and has sold for $499.
A new low-end model with a 40-gigabyte drive will go on sale Nov. 2 for $399.
Unlike the other PlayStation 3 models, the new one won't be able to play games made for the PlayStation 2. In a statement, Sony (Charts) said this was due to a more extensive lineup of games of the PlayStation 3.
The U.S. launch of the 40-gigabyte model was widely expected, since Sony has already announced it for Japan and Europe. It narrows the price gap with competing game consoles, but the PlayStation is still the most expensive.

So for $399 I can get a 40GB PS3 or for $450 I could get a 120GB Elite.
Sure the tradeoff is the PS3 comes with Blu-Ray, but I say screw SONY! I'd still rather buy the additional HD Player than buy a PS3.

Gotta compare apples to apples. Add the wireless connection and the HD drive to the 360 and then look at the price; you are then looking at $729.97 I personally could careless about the HD size as I'd never use it, and if I did, i'd just upgrade to a 500 GB anyways for a lot cheaper.
I still don't know why Microsoft hasn't put in built in wireless.
This said, I still don't know why I haven't picked up another 360. Right now I have all the connections set up to my TV and steal my neighbors 360 when I'm in the mood for some Halo 3

yeap, kind of fucked up. But then again, I expected to play a bunch of my PS2 games. After throwing them in once and seeing how shitty it looked on my TV I never have bothered loading another one.
That said, the wife does play Tetris and The Sims on my PS3

I prefer to keep things non-charcoal.

Exactly. I still haven't made the switch yet, and honestly I might not for a long time. I just bit the bullet and bought a 360 the other day. I compared games that are out now and coming out in the next 2 months and Xbox is definitely winning that department. I was always a die hard Playstation fan, never even played Xbox, but alot of friends had been jumping to the 360 and I like what I have been seeing. I will get a PS3 when the PS3 exclusives start to really surface (MGS, Resident Evil), otherwise 360 will have the same library plus more. Never thought I'd say it, but I just don't want a PS3 right now

They thought they would get by solely on hype, but that didn't do it. Their game releases then and now are slim

they have roughly 30 games coming out in the next month
Microsoft took the smarter approach. They did it wrong with the first XBOX. Most people are willing to spend less for a product, then spend more on accessories to make it better. Not everyone has an HDTV nor do they have HD-DVDs, or Blu-Ray discs. Since no one buys all the accessories at once, so they don't see the bigger picture - that they're spending more in the long run to get the same features, i.e. 360 Elite + Wi-Fi connector + HD-DVD player vs. 60 GB PS3.

In fact, in Japan, Taiwan, HK, Singapore, and South Korea, the main dogs for video gaming are still Nintendo and Sony. Microsoft is a distant 3rd and often looked upon as a 2nd-rate machine. Sure, Sony may be concerned about North America, but at the end of the day, they aren't that worried about the fight back home.
And before the morons on here do their typical haha-this-is-NA idiot spiel as a comeback, please note that I'm just pointing this out...I don't care which manufacturer wins because competition is a GOOD thing. Besides, I own an Xbox anyhoo...just am too cheap to buy a 360.

I buy what I like.
I ask from the perspective of an Xbox owner curious if there is anything worth buying a PS3 for now that the price has dropped.
If I were a PS3 owner I would probably have to break down and get an Xbox for Gears of War, Halo 3, and Bioshock.
MGS4, Killzone 2, and the next SOCOM would propbably be the trifecta that are worth buying the PS3 for IMO.
^ Erm. What games? Well (and this not meant as a shot at you), if you look at the number of "what-game-should-I-buy-for-PS3" threads going on around this sub-forum, you'll get a rough idea.
There aren't many exclusive games IMO right now that make me extra giddy for the PS3 (unless you want to count Ninja Gaiden Sigma--which really is the same game as Ninja Gaiden which I also own for the Xbox which is the reason why I got the Xbox). But, there are some enjoyable titles. I like Formula One. I own Resistance but am lukewarm towards it because I just can't find myself enjoying FPS on consoles...but, alot of people swear by the game. So...

And noting your comments on must-have games, Silver...see, that's really where you and I differ. And in many ways, how the NA and Asian markets differ as well.
The games you listed are all pretty much...FPS types?
Those games REALLY do nothing for me and for the most part, nothing for the number of people I know back home (Taiwan) or chat with from Singapore/HK online. They just don't care for those games. Platformers, puzzlers, strategy (i.e. Romance of the 3 Kingdoms), driving sims...If you were to ask me what game is a must-have, I'd list off games like GT5, MGS4, LittleBigPlanet...etc.
As for the 360? Well, I believe the day I buy the console would be when Ninja Gaiden 2 comes out. THAT is the must-buy for me. Otherwise, they can keep churning out Halos until part 50 and I still wouldn't care.

And oh, can we PLEASE stop having every Sony PS3 news become jumped on by the vocal 360 fans as a Sony-sucks thread?
Cuz, really...it's not that bad. I dunno why the hate. You'd think the machine insulted your moms or something.

That would be like having an Acura thread that didn't have a reference to Acura needing a V8 and/or RWD. Ain't gonna happen

Still, hey...you can't say I didn't try to achieve some form of objectivity.
I played the XBox 360 and I currently own a PS3. I bought the PS3 when I bought my 46" Samsung TV, since they pretty much go hand in hand.
I gotta say I love the PS3. It has all of the functionality I wanted, plus a High Def DVD player, plus games coming out I want to play. (Assassin's Creed, Bladestorm, FF series, etc)
I don't think there is a "better" console between the two. I think it boils down to personal preference. I liked the 360, but the PS3 just matches my requirements better, and for a cheaper price. I wanted high def gaming and high def movies on my new TV. The PS3 did that for $500. (Got the 60gb version, which I'll be swapping for a 250gb hard drive soon.) Then I only spent $15 on a memory card adapter for my PS2 save games, and $25 on a DVD-style remote. Done. I can do everything I want to do on the PS3 and not spend another dime, except for maybe another controller if my wife wants to play something with me.
I looked at the 360 too, but I would have had to spend $400 on the console, $200 for the HD-DVD player, plus wireless gizmo to match the PS3. Not cost-effective.
The wars don't have to be fought. For some people, the PS3 is a better match with the games they want to play and the functionality they include. For some people, the 360 is better. But it's all personal preference.

a while back when the price for the 60gb droped to $500 i went to Toys R Us handed the cashier my money and as she was ringing me up i thought to my self "what the fuck am i gona play on this that i can't play on my 360" right after u handed me my change i asked for a refund, she thought i was kidding but i just didnt wanna spend like $540 on a console that just dosen't have any games. now again i am tempted on the new price drop but i still don't think that the ps3 has any good titles. honestly even if the ps3 was $299 it still would raise the same question in my head and most likely i wouldn't buy it just my

same here, I don't care if a game is exclusive or not. If I like it, I buy it. But I do have RFOM and Motorstorm, the rest are sports games available on all consoles.
Wait, except MLB: The Show, which I absolutely LOVE! so I have 3 exclusives

hence why i'm glad my neighbor bought an Elite. Saved me the trouble to play Halo 3 (Hell I bought him Halo 3). And I have Xbox connections to my TV so I just steal his box and take it to my place

It's pretty funny, these discussions are going on, on every forum I'm on. The 360 lovers do nothing but bash the PS3, but the PS3 owners seem to respect the 360 but preferred the PS3
