Sony: PS5 News and Discussion Thread
it might be coming sooner than later.........
https://www.gtplanet.net/is-sony-pla...on-5-next-year
The gaming community has had to acclimate to a number of changes this console generation, chief among them being the adoption of mid-cycle hardware refreshes in the form of the PS4 Pro and the yet-to-be-released (and officially named) Project Scorpio. If that weren’t enough, one analyst speculates the next generation could be right around the corner.
According to Macquarie Research analyst Damian Thong, Sony is due for continued growth for the remainder of 2017 and throughout 2018. One of the three catalysts will come down to the PlayStation brand, and it’s here that Thong suggests Sony may be planning to unleash the PlayStation 5 as soon as the second half of 2018:
While controversial, were the true intentions behind the PlayStation 4 Pro that of a design study; a peek of what’s to come for the brand?
Thong states that PlayStation VR has sold 915,000 units, which in and of itself strongly suggests the VR peripheral may play a vital role in the presentation of the PS5. With Gran Turismo Sport still expected to release sometime this year, there’s little denying that the sales figure will continue to grow.
Even more interesting is the suggestion of a more powerful GPU with peak performance upwards of 10 TFLOPs, or over 2.4x what the PS4 Pro offers. This would place the next generation GPU within striking distance of the Nvidia Titan X GPU at 11 TFLOPs, and while the actual figure is likely to differ in the time before its eventual release, it remains an impressive starting point.
With truly native 4K likely to be a hallmark of the next generation system, the next Gran Turismo will look even more stunning.
For curious minds, this isn’t the first we’ve heard of Damian’s speculations. Just last year the Macquarie analyst speculated on a slimmer variant of the PS4 (which turned out to be true). The notion of a next generation PlayStation may be a foregone conclusion, but the timetable may be a cause of concern for some, especially with the aforementioned Pro model releasing only late last year.
While two sides of the same coin, the recent release of the Pro places things in a sticky situation, and should the PS5 release late next year it will beckon the question of “why?”, as the recently released uber PS4 has only just begun to find its footing.
Despite the forecast, it bears having to be mentioned that console generations for the PlayStation brand have typically extended to six years before the unveiling of a new model, with the only exception being the PlayStation 3 which stood tall for seven years. The PS4 will be celebrating its fourth birthday later this autumn.
A more likely scenario is Sony will begin teasing the next generation console next year, targeting a 2019 release window thus maintaining the six year time frame.

Is Sony Planning to Release the PlayStation 5 Next Year?
March 10th, 2017 by Michael LearyThe gaming community has had to acclimate to a number of changes this console generation, chief among them being the adoption of mid-cycle hardware refreshes in the form of the PS4 Pro and the yet-to-be-released (and officially named) Project Scorpio. One of the three catalysts will come down to the PlayStation brand, and it’s here that Thong suggests Sony may be planning to unleash the PlayStation 5 as soon as the second half of 2018:
“We see sustained profit growth in Game & Network Services. We forecast OP growth from ¥140bn in FY3/17 to ¥180bn in FY3/18, driven by expanding software sales and profits. A rising digital ratio and a higher mix of first-party titles will help margins – Horizon Zero Dawn, which launched on 28 Feb, looks to have had a good start with a Metacritic score of 88.
While we have tempered expectations to account for rivalry with Microsoft/Xbox and PC gaming, we note that the success of PS VR (which has reached 915K units sold) highlights the health of the ecosystem. We expect Sony to launch a >10 TFLOPS ‘PS5’ in 2H18 to secure the installed base.”

I believe it will come soon. Because, if Sony wants to stay competitive and fresh with VR, and it seems like that's what they want, they need to do more than just a PS4 with some extra oomph. VR was not even in the picture when the PS4 came around. They need a machine that is purpose-built for VR, that has the structure in place to support VR in a profound way.

Release Dates:
PS1: December 1994
PS2: July 2000
PS3: November 2006
PS4: November 2013
PS5: November 2018 (Tentative)
It is not that far-fetched to think it would be released next year, especially given the VR trend.

At this point, it makes no sense to create these brand new consoles. Just make iterative changes to the point where in a few years the PS4 won't be worthwhile to keep but the new one is available for original PS4 users to upgrade.

Eh, gotta disagree on that. Consoles are still viable on the tech front, with new technologies emerging. 4K and VR, namely. Two things that look mighty fine when displayed on a yuuge screen. Also, consoles and video games are still huge money-makers for these companies.

Sony’s PlayStation division accounted for 78% of its Q1 2016 profits

Gaming is the bright shining star at Sony Corp.
The company reported the results of its first fiscal quarter today, and it revealed that it generated $3.2 billion in revenues from its game and network services division during the three-month period ending June 30. That is up 14.5 percent from the same period in 2015. This segment of Sony’s business also brought in $427 million in operating income, which is up a massive 126.3 percent year-over-year. That makes up 78 percent of the company’s $546 million in quarterly profits. Sony has the dominant console in the $99.6 billion worldwide gaming business, and the PlayStation 4 is turning into one of its most important money makers.
Sony points out that the increase in its sales is primarily due to games and not new hardware sales.
“This significant increase was primarily due to a significant increase in PS4 software sales including sales through the [PlayStation Network], partially offset by the impact of foreign exchange rates and decreases in PlayStation 3 hardware and software sales,” reads Sony’s fiscal report.
Overall, Sony’s financials are down year-over-year 10.8 percent to $15.7 billion. And its profits were down 42 percent to $546 million. And you can see that the PlayStation 4 is almost single-handedly responsible for the entirety of Sony’s income. In the company’s financial report, it points to the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake as well as declines in its smartphone, life insurance, and semiconductor businesses as dragging down its performance. The PS4, meanwhile, is the only things offsetting the retraction of the other business segments.
Moving forward, with Sony relying even more heavily on the PS4, the company is expecting even more from its console, games, and PlayStation Network services. But it is recognizing that won’t necessarily happen. It is revising down its full-year revenue guidance for the division from $16.2 billion to $15.35 billion. Sony is still anticipating $1.3 billion in operating income, which is unchanged from its previous guidance.

Yeah I was just saying that the software was what drives their profit and that at a per-unit level the consoles lose money. Of course if you have a customer who buys a ton of games and signs up for PS+ then that console was obviously worth it.

Hmmm Sony has a patent that could suggest the PS5 will offer backwards compatibility with all previous consoles. Eg. PS4, PS3, PS2 & PS.
https://www.techspot.com/news/78553-...atibility.html
if this is true then I’d gladly pick one up to replace my PS3 Slim.
I have so many old PS and PS2 games id like to revisit.

Looks like a beast. I'm interested in the SSD. They say it's faster than current PC SSD

At the moment, Sony won’t cop to exact details about the SSD—who makes it, whether it utilizes the new PCIe 4.0 standard—but Cerny claims that it has a raw bandwidth higher than any SSD available for PCs. That’s not all. “The raw read speed is important,“ Cerny says, “but so are the details of the I/O [input-output] mechanisms and the software stack that we put on top of them. I got a PlayStation 4 Pro and then I put in a SSD that cost as much as the PlayStation 4 Pro—it might be one-third faster." As opposed to 19 times faster for the next-gen console, judging from the fast-travel demo.

The description of a gentle transition indicates that the PS5 will be an iteration on the PS4, instead of being drastically different the way the PS3 was from its predecessor.
fking SMART move
it means we won't have to wait 3 years until good games come out.

"I won't go into the details of our VR strategy ... beyond saying that VR is very important to us and that the current PSVR headset is compatible with the new console," he confirmed.
