Little update...so I call my local gamestop since I have this green sticker on the back on my PS3 that says gamestop refurbished.

I explain to them my story of how I purchased my PS3 from someone locally who bought it used from gamestop but didn't give me the box or receipt.

Anyway, they ask me to bring the system in so they can scan it and see if he bought an extended warranty.

I get there about 20 mins ago and the girl's like umm looks like he didn't buy the warranty but if you'd like we'd be happy to buy the system back from you and issue you store credit.

I'm like really...just how much are you talking here...she's like I can give you 100.00 store credit. I'm like umm thanks but no thanks. She then goes on to tell me some story about the hassle I'd go through if I were to deal with Sony and the chance they'd no touch the system since gamestop already opened it etc....

I cut her off and ask her just how much would my system be worth if it were reading discs? 220 is her answer. I kindly say thanks and walk out the store. What the heck was she thinking?

what do you expect its gamestop.

when you trade in shit, they give you the lowest value and resell it for big money.

I dunno! I got a tip to check them out since my unit happened to be a refurb.

I was hoping for the best. They also had the nerve to tell me that if I were able to swap out, they'd have to call all over the region to locate me a PS3 period since just about every store is sold out since last week

If it were over 300, I'd actually consider it. I've already lost my saves and my paid games. What else do I have to lose?

Plus I know where I can get another 60GB if I needed to.

Not sure but if I were you, I'd grab a spare drive and keep that sucker in the closet just in case. They're only ~ 50 bucks.

On a brighter note, my laser's arrived in IL! The countdown is on! Less than 8 hours to go since UPS usually delivers packages here in the morning

Check out the newest member with a croaked PS3 thread over on the Playstation network.

Funny thing is about a week ago when I first got this problem, they were denouncing all of us as trolls for going on there and making threads discussing our problem. Now its almost the norm. Its like all of our blu ray drives are dying at the same time.

Anyways, that's a forum FULL of its too funny! Check out some of the posts over there! True comedy

Cool

CHICAGO,
IL, US 12/11/2008 12:33 P.M. DELIVERY

Best words I saw all day lol! Everything was packaged very well (much better than the Ebay drive I bought last week. I even got one of the OEM brown neck drives too. That would explain why everything's running so well.

Took me about 20 mins to switch the laser this time. I've got it down to a science now lol

Hell, I'm just happy the system's running awesome again. It seems as if games are loading up a little quicker too or maybe its just me since I was without my PS3 for about a week.

I'll post up pics a little later on. I still have to resize them from the other night.

For now, time to enjoy some laps on Ridge Racer 7

Oh yeah just so you guys know, just because the blue light's on in the front, doesn't always mean its reading or even spinning the disc

That's a good thing

Thanks SG! I'm proud to say my laser's kicking strong after a few solid hours of gameplay!

I feel like a new man. Check out my thread over on playstation network. I'm trying to post my pics up over there but their html codes are all weird.

I'm going to post up my shots over here in a moment. I wanted to finish my post over there then hop back over here with it.

Oh yeah, I wish I ordered this laser first. This whole thread would not have gone this far and I would have saved some time and gas $$$.

Either way, I'm glad its said and done. I'm definitely going out this weekend with some booze buddies...its long overdue haha

I did the 2.53 update last night as well, with my 60gb launch(ish) Ps3. Luckily it's still reading blu-rays. Tried both a movie and spent a few hours playing Fifa09 online

wall-e worked fine, watched it twice now... they did give me problems with mailing in the statement. i expressed my concern as: i bought my sony ps3 at a sony store with a sony card. and you. who works for sony is telling me to go to another retailer? where is your manager... [was on hold for a min or two.. and what do ya kno!? they made a "one time exception"...]

Well my sisters BF called sony and they said as long as he has proof of purchase they will fix his PS3 for free. He was complaining about the 2.52 update causing it to not read disks and they are going to fix it. His is 2 years old, no extended warranty. Might want to call them and see if you have a problem.

Long as they agree to fix it for free I'd recommend you go that route. If they don't then you can consider what I did

When you had the problem, did your PS3 at least show the home screen?

Between my XBOX Elite and XBOX Pro, I am on my 8th XBOX too. I've had 2 Elites repaired or replaced this year alone, and 5 XBOX Pros replaced in the last two years; one reason I'm considering using my gift certificates to get a PS3 since 360's are extremely unreliable.

Mine did it all. Home screen, played demos went online and everything.

Nice! Just make sure you follow my advice about the brown clip vs white clip laser.

Rule of thumb, brown clip = OEM Sony laser
white clip = Chinese variant which could fail quickly (most of these are sold on ebay and a few sites)

The one I bought on www.videogameaction.com is the real one. And it still works 3 weeks later!!!!!

I would just in case. Replacement plan = instant replacement vs. calling Sony and waiting a week or so for a replacement via the mfgr. warranty

There are some tradeoffs...for ex. in my case I have a 60GB backward compatible PS3. They don't make this one anymore.

If I had a replacement plan, I'd get a new PS3 but it would probably be one of the new ones w/o backwards compatibility. So there's a tradeoff to consider in my case as well

If my PS3 is replaced by Sony or under the replacment plan, Wouldn't I lose all my data since the HDD is not detachable and can't be swapped out?

the HD can be taken out, its just not as easy as the xbox 360, but you can change it with any laptop size hard drive.

Hook up a thumbdrive or a external HD and back every thing up to it.

Some things won't copy, like RB gamesaves (or RB DLC).

I tried to copy my friends RB gamesave because he unlocked all the songs, but could not.

Has anyone ever tried putting their HD into a different PS3?

There's a guy on my PS3 bluray fix thread on the Playstation Network forums that's doing the reverse...

he's buying damaged PS3s and fixing them. He's scored a couple already for 100 ish and swapped the bluray drive from one and fixed the power supply for the other one. So now he's got 2 working PS3s for next to nothing.

Then he turns around and sells them for more $$$

Observe!!!

Its a pretty good thread actually. Its actually grown from the time I first posted about my problem on this site back in December.

I decided to share my story there and as a result, I've now helped 14 other people fix their own PS3s dead bluray in the past month as well
