Quick update....FIXED!!!!
Super cliffs....
Tested the ebay bought laser once more today...turned out to be junk. It ended up accepting the games after all but turned out it only plays DVDs and CDs but no Blue Ray Discs....no movies nor games.
I uninstalled that and ended up locating a seller locally who had one KES-400AAA Blue Ray laser drive left. I purchased the drive from him for 50 bucks and installed that.
Tested it...at first it wouldn't take discs but turned out the gears etc must match where they were before. Fixed that....made a quick video which I'll also upload later....tested COD4
and
let's just say I'm one happy camper now! Time to reinstall a few games starting with Devil May Cry 4 and MGS4 and go from there. I feel like a million bucks I swear
Does anyone have a 6 pack of MGD lol

Well I wouldn't celebrate so quickly. After a couple hours, I inserted a disc and got an error message with code #80010514
I did some researching and found out what it really means...
here's an example
http://www.ps3forums.com/showthread.php?t=123712
basically, the new blu ray drive malfunctioned as well and now my system is not reading discs again. I'm really ticked off about this whole ordeal and frankly I'm just going to deal with the sellers to try and recover a replacement working laser or my money back.
Then I'm going to take a long break from this stuff for a while
that is all

Here's what I found out earlier this morning about the blue ray laser I got yesterday.
It was one of the white necked ones on the right which would explain why I only got a couple hours of game play before it crapped out on me.
As for me, I showed this to the seller who instantly agreed to swap it out
for the new PS3 blue ray drive the KES-410 with the dual laser setup
Again....fingers crossed. I pray this is it

Wow, that sucks!
Is the seller who agreed to send you the KES-410, the one from eBay, or the local one?
Good luck with the new drive!
On a sidenote, why would a firmware update kill a laser?

The local seller is the one who has agreed to swap it out for me. (Thank god...I wonder how long this whole ordeal would have taken if I were to go through ebay.)
Which reminds me...let me check my ebay messages to see if they other guy's responded yet

Take a look at the topics on the playstation network forums....
ALOT of people are complaining about updates on PS3...
Like I said before, if this new laser doesn't work, once I'm done swapping the Ebay one I'm shelving my PS3 and moving on to something else that won't take up all my time.
I should be spending time enjoying my gaming console not repairing it/researching how to fix its issues.

Perhaps....but then I'd be out a 150.00 and a PS3 for about 3 weeks..
I thought about it...sure its peace of mind on the backend but since I'm a hands on person, the prospect of never knowing I could have fixed it instantly for 50.00 would have eaten at me especially knowing I could have theoretically had it working in a much shorter time frame.
Its a curiosity thing I guess....I'm always fixing/building stuff. Ever since I was a kid, I've successfully fixed all kinds of things. The PS3 isn't difficult. As long as you have the right working parts and you pay attention it can be done

The bad thing is that I wonder why Sony doesn't fix out of warranty PS3s on good faith like how MS is doing with the RROD.
It is possible that it is coincidental that peoples lasers are dying the same time as the firmware updates, but there seems to be an awful lot...

wow man. i don't even know what to say. This is the first Playstation i've ever had (i use to be an Xbox guy) and Sony is really turning me off from ever buying a PS again. it appears the updates are screwing everyone and now your HD is gone and they won't comp you for a game, which you have proof you paid for...WTF!
I hope Sony gets a lot a neg attention for these updates and poor quality blu ray lasers.
Good luck tiguy, let us know what happens.

At the end of the day though, between our choices of next gen consoles, I will take my chances with a faulty laser vs the red ring of death IMO. Most Xbox owner are probably on pins and needles vs PS3 owners at least based on what I'm seeing online.
Again let us all knock on wood that neither of our consoles fail period. I'll keep everyone posted. I picked up the new 2 eye laser yesterday but the seller didn't have the deck to go along with it.
Turns out the new laser only interfaces with the newer 40GB, 80GB and 160GB PS3s so I'm out of luck there since I don't think anyone sells the deck for the new laser by itself yet.
Anyway, its now for sale on craigslist and I'm about to post it online on Ebay. Its in mint condition, so whoever needs it should be a happy camper.
As for me, I got an email from the Ebay guys admitting selling me a faulty laser that only reads DVDs and CDs and they've asked me to send it back for a full refund. Go figure
I had to order another KES-400AAA laser and should have it in a couple days. I'll post all pics and walkthrough information once the install's successfully completed and tested

I just got a 80gig PS3 a month ago. Just how old are those bricked PS3?
If they last only for a year or so, I think I will start putting a dollar a day in my piggy bank. So, I can go buy a new one when mine is done next year.

Thanks I will. At this point, Sony's appearing to be the Verizon of console mfgrs. especially with how they deal with customers on the backend.

I read through your thread Mizouse. What ended up happening in your case?

Imagine this whole ordeal for me taking at least a week now, being one incident. I cannot imagine doing this 8 times. That's insane.

SG sometimes I wish I bought my system at Walmart or something. I would have swapped it out a week ago and settled for an 80GB in a heartbeat

i wouldnt worry too much about your ps3, its mostly the release units that are going bad and also the failure rate is pretty low.

Jedi, you should be fine then. 2.53 added full screen youtube support and a couple other minor mods. Nothing too major to worry about.
Mizouse, come to think of it, I'm pretty sure I'm running a launch 60GB unit as well.

just spent about an hour or so talking with a sony rep...
as i figured the sony card statement was not enough proof of purchase.. lol i made my case: i bought my sony product at a sony store with a damn sony card.. and there's no way to reprint my receipt!? lol... the statement didn't even meet their requirements b/c it did not have the store # on it... but its a sony card and it only works at sony stores...
anyhow after a good 20 min or so chat... the rep had me on hold.. and kept trying to get me to try to use a different card.. which made absolutely NO sense... i asked for a manager.. voila! fixed.. lol they issed a "one-time" courtesy repair..
i say try to call in before you take things into your own hands!
purchased (according to card): 11/30/2007 i called in 11/29/2008.

V3, the only issue is, I bought my PS3 on Craigslist in June and the owner got it refurbed from Gamestop last summer 07.
He didn't buy any extended warranty... At this point I've gotten at least 6 months of usage from my system. I'll be happy with at least another 6 months or so lol.
Seriously, I may buy a backup laser later in case this happens again. At least I would have more control over how and when my PS3 gets repaired.

I have to wait until tomorrow when the new lense gets here. UPS changed the delivery date from today to tomorrow EVEN THOUGH I paid extra for 2 day shipping grrr
In the meanwhile, I found my old Dreamcast and cleaned it this morning. I've been enjoying a few games I haven't played in over 5 years

True, but every system has pirated games, with exception to the PS3 (as far as I know). And I am pretty sure people are working at that.
I am pretty sure more people were pirating PS2 and Xbox games than Dreamcast...
