Ouya Android Console Thread

The Pebble smartwatch has a challenge on its hands: Ouya’s highly-hackable Android console Kickstarter has crashed past its $950,000 funding goal in the space of less than half a day. A combination of slick, Yves Behar-designed looks, the flexibility of Google’s Android OS, and of course that alluring $99 target price brought out gamers in their droves.

The $95 reward band – the cheapest to get an Ouya console, and of which only 1,000 were available – was gone within a few hours, and the $99 band is roughly half sold. Most impressive, though, is that Ouya has already seen three takers for its $10,000 “Angel List”, backers of which get their name engraved on every console in the first batch, among other things.

Altogether, spread across the various backer tiers, there are 11,950 consoles up for grabs, and at this rate it seems all of them will be gone before the Kickstarter funding round closes. That’s due to happen on August 9, though at time of writing the project has already broken the million dollar mark.

Inside the sleek casing there’s a Tegra 3 chipset, Wifi b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0 and 8GB of internal storage, along with an SD card slot and USB 2.0 connectivity; the controller has all the usual buttons and sticks you’d expect to see, plus a trackpad. The first consoles aren’t expected to ship until March 2013, however, which is likely to disappoint many.

Now taking Pre-orders

Ouya, the upcoming Android-based game console from the company of the same name, ended its Kickstarter run Wednesday night, bringing in nearly $8.6 million from more than 63,000 backers. Most Ouya supporters pledged enough money to receive one of the first Ouya consoles shipping in late 2012 through early 2013 -- assuming the company is able to meet its Kickstarter promises as there are no money-back guarantees for Kickstarter investors.

Ouya is also offering the console online as a pre-order for regular customers starting at $99 (plus $10 shipping). Pre-ordered devices are expected to start rolling out in April 2013.

The Ouya hardware will feature a Tegra 3 quad-core processor, 1 GB RAM, 8GB onboard flash storage, HDMI out with up to 1080p support, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth LE 4.0, one USB 2.0 port, Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich), and an Ethernet port.

There is a lot of excitement, criticism, and controversy surrounding “the little console that could.” Doubters such as Wolfenstein 3D and Doom co-creator John Romero predict Ouya will be a flop, while other gaming pros such as former Infinity Ward creative lead Robert Bowling are excited by the platform’s prospects. If you ordered an Ouya or are still considering it, here are some of the highlights for the upcoming game console based on what we know so far.

The Ouya team has confirmed that the Ouya will support up to four controllers, allowing for multiuser gameplay.

OnLive
On-demand gaming service OnLive said in July it would be available on the Ouya in 2013. OnLive says it will bring a “full console-class experience” to the Ouya, with hundreds of games from more than 80 publishers.

Final Fantasy III
Final Fantasy III from Square Enix will be a launch title on the Ouya. FF III, originally released in 1990, will be updated to take advantage of the Ouya’s graphics capabilities.

Exclusive Game
Game development start-up Robotoki, brainchild of former Infinity Ward creative strategist Robert Bowling, plans to launch an episodic prequel to Human Element exclusively on the Ouya. Human Element is a zombie apocalypse game slated for release in 2015.

Namco Bandai
Ouya is in talks with Namco Bandai to bring a select number of the game maker’s titles to the Ouya console. If you have a Namco Bandai favorite you’d like to see on the Ouya such as Pac-Man, Tekken, or Ace Combat, the company is taking suggestions on Facebook.

Beyond gaming, Ouya also plans to support Vevo music video streaming and integration with the XBMC and Plex media management platforms. You can pre-order an Ouya console on the company’s website.

Ouya to be released next week for $99. Anyone getting one? Looks pretty cool for someone that just wants to play simple games. All games free to try, comes with a dev kit if you want to make games.

Ouya now available at several retailers for $99, sold out at Amazon

Ouya is off to a good start. Following a very successful Kickstarter campaign, the open-source game console finally launched to the public this morning, and just hours into the day it has already sold out on Amazon. Of course, it’s hard to gauge how well it’s selling without knowing how many were available in the first place. For what it’s worth the company says it has shipped ’tens of thousands’ units to early backers.

The $99 console features an Nvidia Tegra 3 processor, 1GB of RAM, and 8GB of internal storage -- expandable via USB. It ships with one wireless controller, over 170 free-to-try games, as well as streaming services such as Twitch.tv, TuneIn, XBMC, iHeartRadio and Plex. Extra controllers will run you $49.99 each.

Also included is the Make Channel, which enables developers to build and test games right from the hardware. The company says more than 10,000 developers worldwide have signed on to create content for the Ouya, so you can expect new titles “every day, every week.” Whether these titles will be able to challenge AAA releases on the upcoming generation of consoles from Sony and Microsoft remains to be seen. But Ouya isn’t passing on the opportunity to throw a few jabs at its opponents saying they are “not the same old games by the same old folks adding +1 to the version number and slapping on a price tag of $60 or more.”

Despite the initial enthusiasm over the affordable console not everything has gone without a hitch. Besides the delay from its original launch date on June 4, many early backers have yet to receive their units, despite promises that they would have them before the console hit retail stores.

Ouya CEO Julie Uhrman says they are working over time to resolve this issue, explaining that the vast majority of affected users are international backers, and it just takes more time to ship to some countries.

Interested buyers can also shop for the Ouya at Best Buy, GameStop and Target.
