honestly just by the numbers, it doesn't look TERRIBLY better than the other two.... can someone enlighten me, why they are making such a big stink about this new card?

I believe the biggest difference is it's ability to run 16x12 with 4aa in practically any game on the market.

despite the fact that it doesn't *look* too much better then the 6800, the actual structure of the card has been redesigned to be much more efficient (they looked at how the top 20 games worked and tweaked the card based upon that) and its basically 20% faster then whatever else is out there. im just waiting a few weeks to see what ati can pull out (though i would seriously hesitate based on my brand loyalty to ever buy an ati).

$1600 for the SLI setup. Not including the new motherboard you'd need.

Actually I've read that the 7800GTX beats two 6800GTs in SLI. That's nice to have.

I have one on order with newegg.com... I'll let you know if it actually beats my 6800gt sli rig or not.

Actually they claim 50% less power consumption

NVIDIA's new 7800 GTX is not only faster than its predecessor the 6800 Ultra, but it requires 50% percent less power from your power supply, and that’s quite an accomplishment.

Whoa, I've been out of the PC gaming world for a while. When did SLI make a comeback?

If it's the same as it was in the 3DFx days, then it means "Scanned Line Interleaving". Basically, you have two video cards working together - one rendering the odd lines while the other renders the even lines - to render the same image.

i remember back in the day my friend had 2 voodoo 2s in SLi

i think the only problem with it these days is that you need a motherboard with 2 16x pci-e slots

Actually, this time around it stands for Scalable Link Interface. It's nice that they picked an acronym that has the same initials.

Geforce 7800GT to arrive on 11th of August

A fast card for $399

By Fuad Abazovic: Wednesday 20 July 2005, 11:25
WE ARE TALKING about one more hard launch. Nvidia will ship the 7800GT cards prior to its launch on the 11th of August and will distribute them to the channel including shops. You will be able to buy these cards the minute the green chaps launch them.

If Nvidia doesn't change its plans, you should be able to get one for about $399 at launch and the partners expect that it might drop fast to much less than that. That sounds like great value to us.

We are still not sure how many pipelines this thing will have, but it transpires that the GT chip will end up with less than 24 pipes. Everyone else is suggesting 20 pipes but it could be even less than that.

Last time we asked we were told the core will work at 400 MHz. µ

the price has gone up just a bit... crazy how these single video cards are costing more than full-fledged computer systems these days... who would have ever thought.... while the cost of most other computer parts is decreasing, for even cutting edge tech, the cost of video cards is increasing... looks like video is now the "meat & potatoes" of modern computers...

Geforce 7800 GT to cost $449

Siggraph 2005 Launch at Quakecon

By Fuad Abazovic in Los Angeles: Saturday 06 August 2005, 11:14

WE HAVE SOME more details about soon to be launched Geforce 7800GT card. The card is scheduled to be launched at Quakecon on the 11th of August and we've already given you the specs. It's a 20 pipelines part and is supposed to perform quite well.

Despite the fact that everyone expected that Nvidia will price its card at the usual $399 range the company decided to push a little bit further and to price this newcomer at $449 mark.

Nvidia already did the same thing with Geforce 7800 GTX and priced it more than people expected as it doesn't have a real competitor, yet. I believe that Nvidia is using the same tactics all over again as it decided to price its card a bit higher as it knows that people are willing to pay for it.

If necessary, Nvidia can always drop the price. As you probably might imagine, Nvidia will have this card in retail at the day of the launch so 11th will be your day for shopping if you want one of the Geforce 7800 GT cards. µ

The cards themselves are pretty cheap to manufacture, most of the money goes to recovering R&D costs. This is why bleeding edge components always come out at staggeringly high prices but in a year or two they're less than half price.

BTW, HardOCP has a review of a 7800 SLI setup: http://www.hardocp.com/article.html?art=ODAw
