Need a new Wireless Router

Nothing crazy, just need to replace my failing Netgear WGR614.

Need B+G, don't care what frequency range (2.4 or 5mHz).

I would REALLY like one of these to last me more than about a year. I have not flashed one yet with DDWRT, but if that is what is needed to keep these things running for more than a year, I am all in.

First failure was the wireless radio transmitter. Replaced that unit with the Netgear. This failure is in the wired ports loosing connectivity and dropping more packets than are handled. DNS errors, dropped VPN connections, server not found issues...

Suggestions from the folks in the know?

I'd go Linksys. I've had two of them over the last 7 years and they've both been spectacular. First was a WRT54G. The classic purple box. If you can find one, get it. They're rock solid. I only replaced mine to get one with a USB port for network storage. When I did, I replaced it with another Linksys WRT-SL54GS.

Pretty much anything Linksys should provide you with years of trouble free operation. I had a D-Link way back when that fried about a month after going out of warranty. Installed numerous Netgears for my Mom and had them all replaced under warranty. They all died that quickly.

While I am leaning toward the Linksys/Cisco line, Linksys has gone to this new horizontal layout that is

A. A pain in the ass for saving desk space

B. A reported space heater due to lack of proper ventilation in the new case design.

Any experience with the newer models?

I have one of those space heater bgn ufo linksys models, it's been stable but it is exactly as you describe. If you were a bit closer I would just give you a WRT54G I have sitting in my cabinet.

No, no experience with the newer ones. I've had my storage link router for about 4 years now and have been happy with it. I did flash it with aftermarket firmware a while back, although I honestly don't remember which one. I was attempting to fix the media server Linksys never did get working right. The aftermarket firmware helped, but it became a moot point when I got my NAS2000 and the media server on it worked right out of the box.

Thanks for the offer!

I will probably find one local and pick it up. Why did you stop using yours? Did you flash it with DDWRT (or similar)?

The wrt was given to me by a friend after I changed to the new n router. He seemed to think that routers were tied to modems.
I had a Belkin before and it had it seemed to be on the 4 day work week. Very progressive. I put up with it for a while taking it's tantrums as suggestions to go outside and be productive, but eventually I wanted gigabit ethernet for doing totally legal things with a blu-ray rom (between my server and my ripping machine) and n wireless for my newer laptop.

How many devices in your home need to connect to your network?

You can go one of two routes:

1) buy an N router AND upgrade all the devices to support N

2) buy a dual band N router that supports older wireless protocols and as time progresses and you replace your home appliances, simply buy N enabled devices.

Personally, I have this router:

http://www.netgear.com/Products/VPNa.../SRXN3205.aspx

It's a dual band N router that supports VPN. I bought this router because my hopes are to be able to access files from anywhere I am for that matter using a VPN connection, but after I switched to AT&T and got an iPhone I didn't want to spend the money on an extra data connection so now I'm just waiting for internet tethering to be offered so that I can access my files from anywhere.

No problem. The device I listed is a little pricey.. but I just noticed they have a newer one that is dual band as well and is much cheaper... I can't speak for it's quality though since it hasn't been released yet, but may be worth waiting for

Would you guys screw off with that netgear junk.

I have both of these, work awesome

WRT310N
WRT160N

Buy one of the 2. 310N features gigabit lan where the other does not. That's probably enough to make your decision right there. Stogie, you need the 310N. linksyslinksyslinksyslinksyslinksyslinksyslinksysl inksyslinksyslinksyslinksyslinksyslinksyslinksysli nksyslinksyslinksyslinksyslinksyslinksyslinksyslin ksyslinksyslinksyslinksyslinksyslinksyslinksyslink syslinksyslinksyslinksyslinksyslinksyslinksyslinks yslinksyslinksyslinksyslinksyslinksyslinksyslinksy slinksyslinksyslinksyslinksyslinksyslinksyslinksys linksyslinksyslinksyslinksyslinksyslinksyslinksysl inksyslinksyslinksyslinksyslinksyslinksyslinksysli nksyslinksyslinksyslinksyslinksyslinksyslinksyslin ksyslinksyslinksyslinksyslinksyslinksyslinksyslink syslinksyslinksyslinksyslinksyslinksyslinksyslinks yslinksyslinksyslinksyslinksyslinksyslinksyslinksy slinksyslinksyslinksyslinksyslinksyslinksyslinksys

i've had nothing but bad luck with many linksys products ranging from routers, access points and their other products like range extenders, etc.

I do feel that the home versions of netgear products do suck a$$, but the business products aren't bad at all. The part that sucks about netgear is:

1) they don't upgrade the firmware on their devices as much as they probably should be
2) their "rangemax" products are nothing but a marketing scheme. while linksys products out of the box support much faster connection speeds, netgear products are purposely capped at certain speeds unless you buy a "rangemax" product that magically bumps the speed up.

Well, my local Costco has the Linksys 320N, so I will probably pick that up this weekend. For some reason I feel like going with Linksys...???... Just go nuts and get a Cisco 851W. They only cost a paltry $350 or so.

I've actually been kicking around the notion of getting one of these for some time now since I know my way around Cisco stuff just enough to cause myself problems.

That's what I was using, but it lacked a few features I was looking for...

I have a linksys WRT54 and have never had a problem with it. Any linksys I have used has never crapped out. I have been using this thing for a few years.

Picked up the Linksys 320N at Costco last night. Going to hook it up today.

Disappointed there is no "verticle" mount option... I may have to 'attach' it vertically to my modem to save desk space.

Reminds me of a install I did where I duct taped a little Netgear switch to a rack....

So after I got my Belkin G that I had for 2 years, N just came out and was the latest and greatest so I got it. Had soooooo many problems with it (ip fragment errors and such), went to Linksys even though my brother had known issues with older linksys routers. Steped back to a G since I don't have any N cards and the PS3 is only B or G and picked up the Linksys WRT54G2. This thing looks mad sick!

Never had any problems with it and gaming has never been better.

Do you mean does it run when it's hot in the room, or, is it hot when it runs?
It is in the computer room in the far end of the house right by a window where it gets up to 80 easily in the room. It's also cool to the touch.

In all the years I had my WRT54G it never gave me the first problem. In fact, its still pulling duty at a buddy of mine's house. His wife is on her laptop 5 days a week. She works for a company on the other coast and does all her work from home. Its been rock solid for them for the last 3 or 4 years (don't remember exactly when I gave it to them.) If all my electronics lasted that long I'd be very happy.

I am not a huge fan of the new "connection wizard" that linksys seems to force you to use to connect a new computer, although now that I have the config on a thumbdrive, it will be easier to do in the future.

Otherwise, the 320 is up and running fine, albeit a bit warm.
