Legendary enters world of 'Warcraft'
By Borys Kit
Blizzard Entertainment Inc. and Legendary Pictures are suiting up for war.
The companies are teaming to produce a live-action film based on Blizzard's award-winning "Warcraft" video games, with Legendary acquiring movie rights to the "Warcraft" universe.
The "Warcraft" games debuted in 1994, and the franchise now has four titles in release. "Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness" (1995) won multiple game of the year awards, while "Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos" (2002) broke sales records. The latest game, "World of Warcraft," is one of the most popular multiplayer online role-playing games, with a reported subscription base of more than 6 million.
The movie would not follow one of the games but rather be set in the epic fantasy universe, which includes orcs, trolls, elves and the undead.
Blizzard chief operating officer Paul Sams said the firm wanted to make a movie for years and met with numerous studios and production companies.
"But it never really felt right," Sams said. "We never met anyone that really understood our franchise, that got what we do. With Legendary, we found a company that specializes in building a small number of big movies. It's very similar to what we do. Blizzard only makes a small number of games; we focus on making big, meaningful games. It's a very similar mentality."
Sams also liked the company's approach to the games.
"(Legendary) didn't say, 'We want to make a great "Warcaft" movie.' It was, 'We want to make a great movie in the "Warcraft" universe.' That was really important to us."
For Legendary, which is developing a live-action version of "Paradise Lost," the game fit the branded fantasy bill the company was seeking.
"We were looking for worlds that are rich in mythology and theme, that were branded in some way, and partners who could help in the translation of making something that was going to be seen as standing above and beyond some of the other translations from game to film that have not worked," Legendary chief creative officer Jon Jashni said.
Although many video game-based movies have stumbled, both "Warcraft" partners are committed to avoid the pitfalls inherent in adapting the genre.
"How you protect yourself is to look for universality" Jashni said, "and who better to be the guide through that than (Blizzard vp creative development) Chris Metzen and the creative folks at Blizzard? They should be the arbiters of what's kept everyone coming to the Blizzard church for all this time."Legendary, under its deal with Warners Bros. Studios., will co-finance.
Lynn Harris and Geoff Shaevitz will oversee for Warners.
