How long does it take to get good at Halo 2 online?

Title says it all. I get pounded by all the lifers on there.

Also, how come is always seems that one guy dominates the game followed by everyone else getting 15 kills, followed by me with 5 (on a good day).

How do you guys get good that this? Any tips? My radar seems useless. Is that because of poor bandwidth? The game play seems fine and I don't think its lagging.

Do people cheat?

When x-box live starts you off. They set you with people in your rank. Many of the players had previous experience with the game off-line of sumwhere else. I always played with my friends and won most of the time. Then when i started online mode I was kicking ass.

BUT I do here there are ways to cheat. Something to do with the modem being disabled or something.

It happens in any online game. For instance, I think I'm quite good at Unreal, but I can find games where I get smoked left and right like nothing - I feel like there's nothing I can do. I don't know if people are cheating, or what. But it's frustrating. On the same token, I find games where I do quite well, even winning sometimes. I think you just need to find games that are more at your skill level - I would imagine they are out there - but it may be harder with Halo 2, just because I don't think you'll see as much casual players out there, I think most of the players will be quite good at it.

i always get slaughter when there are A LOT of people and all the weapons are avaliable.

i think the key to the game is to know where ALL the goodies are and always aim for the head.

my problem is that i need to see a lot of the ground for reference. whenever i fire the shots, it's always gut or leg shots. so they don't have as much damage.

Just practice. Like anything else until you start feeling comfortable with all the maps and all the weapons you gonna get trounced. Your radar only works at close proximity and when someone is moving. No movement=no red blip.

Learn where all the weapons are and how to use them.

Use the bitch combo as much as you can (plasma pistol and battle rifle). When the plasma pistol is charged and you are close enough to see their name pop up, let it go. Switch to the battle rifle and if you hit them in the head its an instant kill.

Learn what weapons go well together i.e. Magnum+smg, plasma rifle+smg etc.

Don't fire the shotgun unless you are close range, and if the target is moving make sure lead them a little, aiming a little ahead of their movement.

Did I mention you should practice?

The best I have gotten upto is level 14 on big team battle. I have noticed many players >level 15 are very good snipers.

EDIT: I have logged abt 900 games online...and have been lingering on level 13-14 for eva

Thanks for the tips. Who would have thought shooting someone in the face would make a difference?

If you are really serious abt improving ur ranking....look here

Here is an excerpt..

First off, the only thing that matters for experience and level calculations is your current experience points and your team's final standing, your place at the end of the game. It doesn't matter how you got there, and it doesn't matter whether you were the one that planted the flag or that got the most kills on your team. All that matters is the end result that your team achieved.

^ Absolutely correct.

If you want to level up forget strategy and find three buddies who are better than you. Guaranteed to work your way up. Only drawback about being high ranked is that it gets harder and harder to find matches.

We used to play big team battle, everyone ranked between 16 and 20 and it sometimes took up to thirty minutes to find matches late at night. And most people ranked that high are cheaters, so it sucks losing to a bunch of people that didn't even earn that rank.
