Half Life 2 Information

My buddy is interested in playing HL2 but doesn't have an active internet connection. Does anyone know if the game can be played in standalone mode without logging into Steam?

If you purchase the game in the store, then you dont need steam. Steam is just the internet way to get it, plus the other online packages.

NOT TRUE... the game needs steam to run the program... It validates all the files and your CD key to avoid piracy... ALL DONE VIA INTERNET

I bought it in a store and one of the minimum system requirements is Broadband internet connection... I bought it the first day it came out and i was pissed off because EVERYBODY was valitading the game at the same time... that shit took forever...

there are probably hacks but i dont know of any :X

That's what i thought, because i had to connect to Steam to validate my files also. However, there is another way you can do it by installing Steam along with the game and then opening Steam in offline mode and you should be able to play it from there, according to Planet Half Life.

Well you could try installing it on your friends computer with an internet connection, and then once you update your steam etc, then just go home and you should be able to play?

That's worth a shot, maybe we'll do it. I still think the offline mode of Steam is our best option.
