THE SEARCH outfit Google knows the sort of programmers it wants to join its company - gamers.
The personnel department has decided that the best way for it to get the talented staff it wants is to bin the CV and cover letter approach and run a virtual tournament.
"Code Jam 2005" is designed to sort the sheep from the goats. The top prize is $US10,000 but the main thing is to offer the winners a job at Google.
In its job add Google said that its programmers have to solve major problems such as running its search algorithms on a graph of three billion nodes and 20 billion edges. We can see how this would be a major problem.
Competitors entering the competition via the internet are divided into "rooms" and given coding problems to quickly solve on their own. They have to see if they can create an accurate solution in the shortest amount of time.
The top 100 contenders will be invited to a championship round at the holy city of "Googleplex" in Mountain View on September 23, according to the company, as it says, here.
