Does the PS3 upcovert regular DVD's?

I posted this in H & G, but decided to move it hear instead since there's more traffic.

Simple question; does the PS3 up-covert regular DVD's like many stand alone Blu-Ray players do? I've been searching the web and some sites say it does, while others say they don't. Need to know for sure; before deciding on getting a PS3 or a stand alone player.

At this point PS3 gaming is not really a priority since I already have a 360, but I have been contemplating making the switch over to PS3 eventually since my 360's keep dying.

yes it does.
I was considering the PS3 for a while for my Blu-ray player.

cool! I will get a PS3 instead of the standalone then. Sony also is having a special where if you apply for Playstation Credit card you get $150 off of a PS3. That coupled with my gift certificates, I can get the 80GB for free! Or I may just pass on getting the credit card which I'm only going to use once anyway and just pay the extra $150 out of my pocket.

The 80GB is not backwards compatible, but I'm not interested in playing PS2 games anyway.

^Nevermind on that $150 off deal; can't split tender with my gift cards and PS card. The whole purchase has to be on the PS card to get the $150 off. Oh well, I didn't feel like driving down to that Sony Style store in Lenox Mall anyway; the people that work in that SonyStyle store are some snooty bastards.
