Computers; what's your setup?

I'm not sure if I'm the only one, but I really enjoy building and tweaking PCs. After having this summer job I'm able to afford a really nice system for gaming, encoding / decoding, watching DVDs, anything .

Intel Core 2 Duo 6850 G0
Asus P5K Premium
2gb of Crucial 8500 Ballistix
8800GTS 640MB
520W OCZ Powerstream
Prometheia Mach II Single stage (Cooling, puts the CPU under -40C)

Anybody else into computers .. or am I the only one? haha.

Mine's kinda outdated, but I'll post anyway.

Asus A8N-SLI mobo
AMD64 3500 Barton core
2GB Geil RAM
Two 150GB Raptor 10k drives in Raid 0 striping <That's new. Kicked my performance in the ass. I love it.
EVGA 7800GTX KO
Antec 450W PSU
Koolance tower, keeps the CPU around 30, 34 under load.

I have to upgrade, but moving out and buying furniture was more important.

The Dell behind me:

Pentium 3 1 ghz
1 gig memory
80gig RAID 5 with 6 15,000 rpm hard disks
1 DLT tape drive that looks like one of those 8-track tape from the 70s.
and that POS behind me is very heavy and noisy!!!

Ubuntu runs great for me. Its fast and comes with a lot of useful programs. Its also very easy to use, I recommend it for anyone who is interested in an alternative OS.

Games? Not too many. There are emulators out there such as Wine that do a decent job.

Personally I'd do a dual boot setup, preferably with another hard drive if possible. Keep XP for games and use Ubuntu for everything else.

I'm another ubuntu user. Games and recent programs can be a pain in the ass to get running like Quick books and MS office after 2003 for example. If you head over to winehq.com you can look through the compatibility list.

Anywho

overclocked pentium 805d
2 gigs of DDR ram
A 200 gb samsung, 160 gb seagate, 250 gb seagate, and 250 gb wd hard drive
8600 gt
Still have a XP pro partition for games.

I also have a pentium M acer travelmate 8104, it was by far the least amount of fun i've had installing linux, but after allot of work it runs quite well. I also learned allot more that way.

Wow my computer is pretty old.

It's a Dell Precision 530 workstation. Specs:

2 x Intel Xeon 2.4 ghz w/ HT
1.5 gb PC800 RDRAM
2 x 80 gb HD, 1 x 160 gb HD (all Seagate)
Nvidia 6600GT AGP (main graphics card)
Matrox G450 PCI (extra two screens for a total of 3)
XP Pro SP2

I used to feel special with the dual proc setup. Now every computer is a dualie.

Nice!!

I dont suppose you would know if ubuntu can run FrameMaker and or Dreamweaver?????? Two ESSENTIAL things I need to be able to use.

Im actually thinking about getting a macbookpro now possibly,........

Whatever my solution,........I gotta be able to run those two programs, and have them compatible with my home comp (XP) and the ones at school (XP) for those programs.

Siggy is helping me figure stuff out now too which is good.

for anyone interested in pics. drilling out and doing the cable management was a major PITA. there is a new antec 1200 coming out soon which is a bigger version of this and i'm pretty sure it has pre-cut holes for the wiring.

I built my first from the ground up in '04, its outdated now, but it still serves my purposes well enough. I want to build a new one, I just really don't have the time. It was real fun building though.

Here is what I originally built it with, I have since made some upgrades

Original build in May of 04:
====================
AMD Athlon64 3000+
MSI K8N Neo Platinum
ATI RADEON 9800 128MB
1GB Corsiar Value Select PC3200
200GB Maxtor 7200RPM HD
Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS
Samsung DVD+-RW
Samsung CD-RW
Case: XION XON-002

Upgrades
===================
AMD Athlon64 3400+
ATI RADEON X800XL 256MB
new 500W PSU, (original that came with case failed)Added more fans, and switched out the IDE cables to lighted cables.
Have a couple of 500 GB Buffalo external drives for backup. (I learned my lesson after having to pay out the a$$ to get my stuff recovered last year).

I also may bump my RAM up to 2GB in the future, but never get around to going to NewEgg and ordering some.

1 gig RAM
Mac OS X Tiger (eagerly awaiting the Leopard update)

Still contemplating if I should install Parallels 3.0 or not ... maybe I'll use XP for Quicken since the Quicken Mac edition sucks donkey balls.

I'm constantly upgrading, here are the latest specs and the newest stuff.

2 X Western Digital Raptor 10K drives (raid)
1 X Maxtor 750GB Sata
762mb PNY video card
Intel Core Duo Quad 2.6ghz w/ zalman cooler (pure copper)
2g Corsair Dominator
Sb EFX Fatality Sound Card w/ 5.1

Zalman Liquid Cooling thingie (I forget the name)
New Lian Li or Antec Quiet Case (I'm trying to keep this rig quiet)

No lights, no bells and whistles, I like my PC's to be quiet and understated in looks.

what do you think of that zalman cooler? Is it a straight on one or a 90 degree one? i've read reviews that say they are all hype and do no better than stock coolers, even the bigger zalman 90 degree ones. After research, I went with the Asus artic square, which is currently keeping my Q6600 at 38 degrees while outputting ~2.8ghz, without raising any of the stock voltages.

Super quiet, super cool, low hype. BTW if you want quiet and thermal management, check out the case I posted. (sounds like you're looking for a new one)

I give them to family, since they don't game and don't care about the video/speed so much.

Which case did you post (Can't find it). I have been looking at the Zalman Reserator 2 for almost zero noise. I want to pipe it through the video card as well if I can so that my system is about as quiet as I can go. I see that BFG makes a water cooled video card that is way cool (instead of having to put on a third party cooling plate).

I'm not sold on liquid cooling necessary being better, I was sold on the quiet element. Fan coolers always seem to get dirty and eventually get noisy I was hoping to avoid that if possible.

I was also thinking of trying one of the new Corsair power supplies (modular) either that or the same company that falcon northwest uses for their Mach 5's. 500Watts or less is plenty, I can't believe some people are buying 1000W power supplies for single proc and graphics card systems.

I have a 350w power supply that is doing the job for my rig. Why so little juice? Because its more than enough, and its designed to be *quiet*.

The case I got is called the Silentium T1. I'm very impressed with it, it does a very effective job at thermal management (re: my temps) and its quiet. I should mention I achieve those proc speeds and temp ratings while overclocked AND fans at a nice and low 900rpm, not cranked up.

Its only fault (if I had to pick one) is thin metal on the back end (only) which allows what little noise the thing makes to be heard out the back. I have it positioned right at my feet in an open space, and aside from a very low hum (nice and quiet) of HDDs that is necessary for any system, the only time I hear it is spinning a disc. It is by far the quietest system I have ever owned, while 4x as powerful as my last desktop. Its also the first system I ever designed with quiet in mind as a top design factor, so I'm very happy with the results.

CORSAIR Dominator 4GB (4 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual

After I test my temps in my current case I am gonna overclock it to 3.0ghz. However not sure if its going to cool well enought so I might upgrade my antec sonnata case to a Lian-Li Silent Server Case.
