Broken Wii - What do I do about it?

Sadly, I was one of those Nintendo fan boys that waited about 5 hours in line for the launch of the Wii.

In short I barely played it and though there was that strap recall I already have 4 remotes. When playing Baseball a strap broke off and the remote hit my Wii.... What are the odds of that... Now my Wii turns on but it can't read the disc and I see a nice crack at the corner near the eject button. It just takes the disc in gives me about 5-7 beeps and says "disc unreadable"

I know people break their TV's but who would've thought it'll hit the tiny Wii?

Is there anything I can do about this? I feel like I broke it... I was thinking of getting another Wii and getting a Warranty on it through Best Buy and just giving them the broken one. I'll get one back and I can give the other one as a present to my cousin or brother...

Were you not actually holding onto the remote?? I tried the Wii for the first time last night, and almost didn't see a need for the strap as long as you held the remote.

You realize Best Buy will not replace it if they find physical damage right? A cracked case is pretty obvious the cause of the failure.

its rediculous how many Wii related accidents there have been.. its either the TV breaking, the Wii unit itself or a window or something

Word on the street is that very, very soon Costco will be "tweaking" their exchange policies.

I would not be surprise at all... especially on electronics like Plasma/LCD TV's. A friend of mine said he actually got hassled a little when he was attempting to return a plasma, and even though they evetually let him... they told him that the policy is 1 year... but one time I was kinda flirting with one of the employees behind the customer service counter and she told me that they still pretty much take anything back (other than computers, which is limited to 6 months)

1: Best Buy records the serial number, so that won't work.

2: That fraud,

All is saved...

I couldn't pry the thing open due to that proprietary 3 sided screw. So kept smacking it and it now reads the CD's!

Only thing now is the eject button doesn't work properly, but at least I don't have to "commit fraud".

^ I thought it'll be a good work out to get into it I guess.

Anyway once I got it working I gave it to my cousin who tried bowling... the remote flew out and hit the ceiling (a 20ft lofted ceiling).

Maybe my family shouldn't be playing the wii...

Yeah, maybe not!

Honestly, I just don't see how hard it is to hold onto the remote and keep it from leaving your hands.

There's really no need to use so much force or pressure; it mostly reads your movement, doesn't it? I barely applied any unnecessary force when I played the games I tried last night and enjoyed it. In contrast, some of the other people looked crazed with the controller.

I usually tell people who use my wii "You could use the strap, or you could just not let go of the remote"

that pretty much sums it up, but because I've seen so many people do retarded things and break stuff with flying wii remotes I just tell everybody to put the strap on. I'll probably ge the replacement strats soon anyways just to make sure this kidn of thing doens't happen to me.

No pun intended on that title

Thinking back on it though, I'm glad it didn't hit the TV... $250 in damage vs $2000. At least the thing works after hitting it again.

Because of assholes like above that ABUSE (STEALING) the Costco policy.

Or the asswipes that buy and return plasma TVs to upgrade because they drop in value so fast or the super bowl is over and they can't really afford the TV.

A few bad seeds ruin it for everyone else

I love this country, all of the low life's just expect everything should be given to them. Then sue when they expect even more for nothing... and get angry when they can't screw someone/company over.

yes, I'm a costco member.

p.s.

I own a Wii /w two remotes. Never had a problem with the remotes flying around. I also don't play it like a monkey on crack. There is nothing to gain throwing the remote around as fast as you can. It doesn't enhance the game any... amazes me some people haven't figured this out yet. Also Nintendo will send you upgraded straps if you contact them.

oh excuse me... I didn't know you were such an expert on the field of retail... Have you ever wonder why businesses like Costco, Nordstrom, and Home Depot does so well? Among other reasons... like customer service, and selections... their return policy is why people shop there... Yes, people return often... and yes, I have returned some electronic products, but people like me also dump more money there than anywhere else... They know that people do such thing, but they also know that it brings in more money BECAUSE consumers can buy with confidence... I can't say for sure about Nordstrom or Home Depot... but with Costco the relationship they develop with the venders, a... "covenant" I guess you can call it... is strong. They buy A LOT, and I mean a lot from companies (at a lower cost)... but the agreement they have is that the companies take back returns, and Costco get credit for each unit returned. These companies (like Nintendo) abide because the last thing they want is to lose a large account like Costco... it's a "win, win" situation...

and yes, I've worked at both Costco AND Nordstrom before... and long time member at Costco since they were Price Club... and why Do I still shop there all these years?

blah blah blah

Stealing is stealing mango.... returning something because *YOU* broke it is stealing and simply dishonest. Why should someone else pay for YOUR mistake?!?!? Who do you think eats that cost?

Buying a plasma TV and returning it because it dropped in price one year later and buying the next model up is stealing. Same as buying a notebook computer and upgrading it every 6 months with the price drops.

The policy was never created for any of those reasons The only reason they changed the policy was from people abusing it...

yes, if you use the return policy legitimately it's great. However as more and more shady people keep doing things like I mentioned above the policy's start to go away. Whoops, too late; it already has... computer policy has changed, TV policy has changed...

This is all from people who abused it. Wake up, if all the losers abusing the policy wasn't hurting anyone they wouldn't have changed it.

I'm glad you have found a way to justify it to yourself that you deserve something for nothing!

p.s.

I'm well aware of where returns go at Costco. I'm also well aware that Costco has LOST vendors because of returns. And some of the current ones were threatening to leave if they didn't do something about it. There's a bunch of posts from top managers who work there on a few forums I've visited.

And it doesn't require an "expert" or store employee to realize that too many people abusing a return policy will cost the vendors $$. This is pretty simple math. The product is now an open box item and depreciated, product is also more than likely missing materials. Then to add now you pay an employee to sell a depreciated open box item on the wholesale market... Considering what their original agreed upon price was from Costco, they really take it in the ass when someone returns a 2 year old plasma to "upgrade/swap it out " and values have dropped $2k or more.

I don't see it being any different here....

I think that people are into victimless crimes now a days....and the Costco Inc and the RIAA don't make good victims...

first of all... back off a bit... I'm not the one with the broken Wii, here... and yeah... my Xbox 360 frozed on me twice... and NOT due to any abuse or "accidents"... I didn't lie... I told them exactly what happened... and they took it back with no further questioning... all I'm saying is, I buy from Costco with confidence... I'll give you the perfect example... I had a brand new PS3-unopened... I got it at Game Stop... but I returned it, just so I can wait til Costco gets their shipment it... and just like that... Game Stop lost a sale and Costco going to (eventually) make one sale, and yes that's only ONE... but it's people like me that keep bring $$$ to the company... cause it's something call loyalty...

and you said something about "open box"? Costco does NOT sell "open box"

I thought I throughly explained it, but I'll re-iterate for you again. Maybe re-read my post again...

So when joe jerk-off returns his fully working 2 year old plasma (which is worth thousands less now than he paid for it) to upgrade it to the next model . He returns the TV, gets his $$ back and gets the new model all because he thinks he deserves it. The open-box depreciated items he returned go back to the vendor who gets totally screwed. They get an old used depreciated TV, loss of the original sale, and now has to sell it to the wholesale market. That's how abusing the return policy screws everyone... People do it all the time with items at Costco. It's why they are changing their policy's...

Returning an item you knowingly broke and expecting a new one is no different than wanting to upgrade your TV for free every 2 years. If you think it's OK to return a item you broke to Costco expecting them to replace it for free there is something wrong with the way you view this. You suggested that it was OK to do this the previous page.

It's because of people who abuse the system that it's being slowly taken away from us...

I'm 100% with ya on their return policy, it's awesome. But slowly it's being taken away from us. Computers returns are 6 months now and TV(s) are 1 year... whats next? Being a member I take offense to anyone who talks about abusing their policy's. I don't want to lose yet another one...
