As of June 2, 90 million units of Sony's PlayStation 2 have shipped to stores worldwide, with 36 million of the computer entertainment system being shipped to North America. Accompanying the consoles, over 800 million games for the console have hit the market.
The newest, slimmed down version of the game machine has been particularly popular in recent years with over 16 million PS2s shipping in the last fiscal year alone.
Sony's next gaming console, PlayStation 3, will begin shipping next spring, though the company has not yet made any announcements concerning the United States market.

holy #%@%... crazy numbers... 863 million PS2 games sold at about $45 a pop = $388,350,000,000. umm.... yeah. I think Sony is doing OK.

EVERYONE seems to be in Tokyo this week. Following on from the Xbox 360 summit there Monday, Sony has come out with some interesting numbers for its PlayStation sales and also showed off several of the games that will be released on the PlayStation 2 over the coming months in the hope to use them as a stopgap between the release of the Xbox 360 and the PS3.
The firm told an audience that 91.62 million PS2 units have been shipped worldwide thus far, with 37 million of those going to North America, 33.21 million to Europe and a further 21.41 million units going to Japan and the rest of Asia. .
North America gobbled up 395 million of the 863 million games sold worldwide with Europe consuming 292 million and Japan and Asia the remaining 176 million. The total number of PSone and PS2 games sold is 1.822 billion, of which 767 million went to North America, 594 million to Europe regions and 461 million in Japan and Asia. .
Both consoles are now available in more than 120 different countries and there are more than 7700 PSone and 5200 PS2 games on the market. All in all a bunch of figures that Microsoft bosses are looking at with yearning eyes. .µ
