Tires question.
Tires question.
Hey all,
I'm in need for a tire change and I could use some help!
I currently have Yokohama Y580's on my car and have had them for a good number of years straight, even in the winter.
My question was, does anyone else drive with summer/all-purpose tires here in the winter? last year I drove with the Y580's and they seemed to work just fine for me, though there wasn't too much snow.
I'm thinking of buying the Yokohama S.drive but I wasn't sure if that was a good idea or not. I'm hoping some people can chime in and help me decide on a set of tires.
Also I drive a 2003 TL-S and live in Evanston, so snow cleaning is pretty good around here.

Note sure you'll find this helpful or not considering I don't experience with Yokohama or drive an '03 TL-S, but thought I'd drop my $0.02. I drive an '08 TL-S and just replaced the OEM Michelin Pilot HX MXM4s (@54k miles on them) for Bridgestone Potenza RE970ASs. The Michelins are a Grand Touring tire, and they worked very well for me - they were quiet and carried me through 3 winters, with the last winter being a bit harrowing at times. The Bridgestones are an Ultra-High Performance tire; so they're not as quiet, but perform better on wet and dry - in the straights and in the corners - than the Michelins. I've not had them for long, but since you're in the Chicago area, you know it's rained quite a bit the last few days. I can attest that these grip very well. Granted, we've not seen snow yet, but these are rated as a good performer in all elements, comparatively. Also note, since this is a heavier tire than the Michelins (about 3-4lbs per tire), I'm somewhat expecting to see lower mpg over time. It's still too early to tell on that, but I've been paying close attention and haven't seen any change whatsoever.
All season tires are worth shit in winter and cold conditions, you would be better off having a set of winter tires if you can afford it, I bought me some 17 in steelies from tirerack with some blizzacks and haven't looked back, I say screw all season tires, i only have a summer and a winter set.
I got 07 TL-S and I replace my oe tires with Bridgestone Blizzak on oe rims and bought me a set of 19s with Hankook summer tires. Best decision ever. Can't go wrong with a set of winter rims and tires.

As an aside - I'm outside Boston and we see a fair amount of the white stuff although last year was very light.
