Apparently, these new systems can last for 100K under severe service, and 150K or longer under normal service.

BTW, normal service is actually 150K, not 100K. They're designed to last 150K under most conditions.
Take This: The replacement air box unit (air filter is sealed inside air box) costs $180 online, over $250 if you bought it at the dealer!

Pfft thats nothing, people have taken vw oil bath filter elements off 30 years later, cleaned the horse hair up, and put them back in.
I say we all go back to air cooled 1.6 litter engines with oil baths and 30 some hp.
Neat though, the foam filter thing that is.

I'm sure that people with lease cars will find it nice, that they won't have to touch it durring their time owning th ecar.
