Z4 naming ?

Why did BMW rename the Z3 the Z4.

I thought the new 3 series coupe would be a 4 series, but they didn't go that way.

My thinking was that the 7 series is a 4 door and the 5 series is a 4 door. The 6 series is a two door and the 8 series was a 2 door.

But then again I guess the 1 series in europe is a 2 door or a 4 door right?

So what was the deal with renaming the Z3 to Z4?

Ya know thats weird, bmw uses chassis codes for their models.

Like the E46 was the 99-05 3series. And now the new 3series sedan is the E90

The Z cars seem to just use their badge as their chassis codes

Also i think the main reason they went away with the 4series idea was because of the M3. They didnt want the M-car to be M3 and M4 since the M3 name has a long history.

E36/7 is the Z3 since it was based somewhat on the E36 chassis
E85 is the Z4

No idea why they went from a Z3 to Z4 though

possibly to try and get away from the "cute" image that the z3 carried? that is what i would guess.

From what i gather is that BMW did it just for marketing purposes.

Maybe because the Z3 had a girly image?
