And then you have this:

DETROIT - Japan's Toyota Motor Corp. is recalling 92,577 of its Celica cars in the United States to fix a problem with their daytime running lamps, federal safety regulators said Wednesday.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said the recall, involving Celicas from the 2000 and 2001 model years, was ordered because the running lamps are too bright and fail to conform with federal motor vehicle safety standards.

A similar recall affects 1,378 all-new Cobalt compact cars from General Motor Corp.'s Chevrolet division, NHTSA said.

It said a bulb shield in the Cobalt's headlamps, which prevents them from causing excessive glare for oncoming drivers, can loosen or break due to vibration, increasing the risk of a crash.

That's because they set the DRL's on highbeams, which I never understood anyways. Full power highbeams are annoying even during daytime, that's a no-brainer.

They could just set the DRL system to automatically light up the lowbeams, and the taillinghts, and we'd be rid of the problems. But somehow, for some reason, since it is government-regulated, it has to be complicated.

But then what happens to all the government jobs related to finding and fixing these problems? You wouldn't want people to lose their jobs, would you?

They do help you to see things more clearly just as you hit them.

Debatable, but a different thread.

Just to play devil's advocate, this is a problem with the manufacturers and doesn't affect the merits that have been argued for DRLs. I'm surprised Toyota would have this problem as they sell Celicas in Canada that must have DRLs.

My solution is simple. I park my car in a valet-managed parking garage, and they turn on the lights to drive the car up out of the bowels of the garage. I leave with the lights on, get to the office, let them turn off automatically, and - voila - they are on for the evening drive home. So I think everyone should park in valet parking garages where these things are just taken care of for you.

Seriously, this is probably the only thing I miss from my old Jetta GLX - and yep, it makes a difference in glare light as much as in dim light, particularly if the glare light is in a hazy atmosphere.
