The blackline tails make the 3 tails much more tolerable.

Wonder why the sedan gets different tails than the coupe which look really nice.

Back on topic, I will be test driving the G37 this Thursday (thanks to the Infiniti invitation). I really want to test drive the G35, since I do prefer sedans.


I test drove the E90 335i and loved it. Stylewise, it really does not look any different than the E90 330i I drove previously (aside from the dual outlets).

I think Ive seen your car at other boards... its the nicest E90 out there, imo. And, it is an exception. If thats your car, to you.

For fun, I played around a little with it... albeit minimally.... but the car seems to lose some character with more "normal" looking taillights... maybe the current ones aren't so bad after all. Unfortunately I'm not quite bored enough to try pshopping the coupe's taillights in...

I drove a G37 the other day, very nice car - congrats to anyone ordering. We priced it up in my config, came out to $1,600 less than my 335i OTD.

so yeah - I think its that MT article that said the G37 beat the 335 that has resulted in a much greater than normal defensiveness of the 335 in relation to the G.. its just not true.

unless you compared a fully loaded G37 with a base 335 coupe... i dont think it is possible.

A fully loaded G35 coupe back in the days is pretty much the same price as a base e46 330i.

I'm in Canada - the price for the G37 equipped the way I wanted it was $53,850, with freight and tax it was $63,230.10. That's sport, tech nav and prem. My 335i was $64,970 otd, that's sport, nav, logic7, comfort access. I got 3.5% off my 335i, the Infiniti guy was willing to give me $1000 off (I've dealt with him before). I'm just giving you the numbers I got, take them for what they are worth.

Like I said, the G37 is a nice car.

Ya, it's $4200 CAD, I didn't get it on my 335i because it didn't have anything I wanted. I wasn't really comparing them equally equipped, just the way I would equip them.

My buddies wife just picked one up from Patrick the other night. Black on black...pretty sweet.
But it's funny...all she kept saying was how "it's a BMW" or "because it's a BMW".
It took her less than two hours for her to become one of those annoying BMW people.

I wanted to smack her but I don't think my buddy would appreciate that.

Totally offtopic, but please figure out your club situation before you leave. My wife just went this past weekend and she said Vegas was nuts! My boys from LA keep on telling me the same thing, it's not like it was a few years ago. Things are out of control now (drink prices, cover charge, guestlists, etc). Be prepared. They actually prefered the G37 out on the track for brakes, better wheel and tire, and it didn't go into limp mode, like the manual 335i. I can't believe it happened on the manual, I thought it was only the auto. I don't even think BMW can fix it.

I'm not sure the Infiniti car salespeople are any different than BMW / MB / Audi / etc salespeople. More or less, they will size you up based upon what you drive. I'm not sure why they do so but maybe 1st impressions work both ways (ie buyer & seller). It all boils down to whom is working that day. I went to school with the manager at the local Infiniti dealership and I'm treated better there than my wife treats me! LOL.

Anyway ... isn't the nationwide gala event starting today? Just called my local dealership and there's a 6MT sport model for sale ... manager's gonna see if he can sell it to me really cheap for a new model (ie VPP ) but we'll talk numbers after my test drive tomorrow.

I could go across the street to the BMW dealer to see what the 335 is all about. I should call to see if they have one I can actually drive. They are such butt heads every time I have gone but I will try and keep an open mind when I go back-to-back on those cars.

You are right. But I know people who own BMW's that are non 3-series BMW's stay away from the 3-series people because even they find them annoying.

I made sure I had plenty of time this afternoon to go back-to-back between the BMW and Infiniti dealers (across the street from one another where I live). First stop was the BMW dealer. I made an appointment to test drive the 335 -- they didn't have a stick except the cabrio in the showroom (which was optioned out to C$72k -- way out of my price range and far overpriced is what it's worth) They had an auto with navi (MSRP C$59k)... so I went with what they had in stock to drive.

My impression of the 335 auto in a nutshell: it is ridiculously fast, even in auto form. Mash on the gas, give it a split second to spool up the turbos and that thing has oodles of power and then some more in case you didn't think that was enough! Even on the twisties (on-ramp to expressway ... couple side-roads in the country side) it handled its own with me, my bud, and the salesguy (who was younger and encouraged me to trash the crap out of the car. Shifts for the 6-speed auto felt seamless. For run-flats, I was surprised how well it absorbs road imperfections -- not very harsh at all. And what somewhat disappointed me ... how well-insulated the car is from the outside -- the sounds of the turbos are drowned out. Two pet peeves:

1) when the car launches from a start in city driving -- it seems to hesitate for a moment before wanting to go. Perhaps it is because the 'adaptive' driving algorithm of the car ... it was just strange for it to hesitate when I wanted to 'keep up' with traffic without getting onto someone's ass in less than a second ... LOL.

2) iDrive -- I need more time with it to fully do the simple things like change the radio station (or shut it off)

Going over to the Infiniti dealership ... they had a sport model for me and my bud to test drive. I went to high school with the manager -- so we had a little more time and a lot more freedom to drive this demo. The stick is vastly improved with the outgoing model -- the hype on this (and I consider myself a better-than-novice) is true -- a lot less feedback and finding the gear is easier. The clutch needs to be held a little longer than the Hondas I have driven, but that may be due to the clutch being so new. The power in the new VQ engine is intoxicating ... the sound from the exhaust even more so. The G sounds/feels more raw than the 335 -- the 335 is a lot more sophisticated feeling than the G ... so I can see why some would go the route of BMW as opposed to Infiniti. The brakes on the 14" rotors on the G feel more 'powerful' from 62-0 (100km/h = 62mph) than the BMW. So I can agree with the editors of C&D on this ... (but I didn't punish the cars like they did ...)

My only beef with this comparo is that I did not test drive a manual 335. If Crazy Sellout comes to the Metro Detroit area with his 335 ... I'd like to drive it to compare. (hint, hint)

Overall, the 4 years BMW paid maintenance is definitely a big plus -- however, I'm almost positive that I'll keep the car longer than 4 years so I'm not sure what the cost to maintain a turbo'ed BMW. Infiniti has done great things to the interior to the G. I like the layout better than the BMW however, I don't like reaching over to get to the seatbelt while the BMW has the cool device that brings it within easy reach (I like the creature comforts that BMW has in their cars) however ... I don't like having to put the key into the slot before starting it. Seems silly when you have a push start (just like the S2k ... but at least the S2k was designed in 1999 as their excuse).

So ... as it stands ... I am seriously looking at a G37 after today's test drive. I just need to get the boss (aka wife) to agree to this ... then I can put my car on autotrader and we can start talking hard numbers with the dealer. It'll take them at least a couple of months before they can get one in athens blue with stone interior for the sport model ...

Did you have the tranny is D or DS? The delay in D is a common complaint, it's a throttle delay. Switch to DS and no delay. I know, stupid. I always drive it in DS.

FWIW, you don't need idrive to shut off the radio or change the station; that used to be a problem on the 7 and 5 (and why people hate idrive), on the 3 the only thing you *need* it for is the nav. All hvac and radio controls can be done conventionally.

BMW has 1 of the most confusing control layout ever. When i was driving my friend's 745 to vegas. i tried to turn off the annoying navi voices (terminate destination).. i spent all 4 hrs trying to figure it out and till this day, i still dont know how to STOP that shit.

i hate Idrive so much that i would give up navi option just because of Idrive

I'm glad BMW did something smart like convert some functions to use neophyte-iDrive people with conventional controls. The car I test drove did have the navi, so the iDrive button was there (definitely a C$2900 option I would not add to that car!)

The salesperson did not mention driving in DS while in traffic ... I did play around with the manual mode and it felt great -- never tried it from a standing start, however.
