wreck

My friend got in a wreck, for the second time in 6 mos. He drives an '05 Scion Tc. This time, he hydroplaned down a 10 foot hill. Pretty much every panel of the car is messed up, except for the back and rear bumper. I want to help him find parts, but I have no idea where to start; PLEASE help me!

He'll have to pay a crap load if he claims it on his insurance, so we've decided he'd be smarter to do it himself. We found a guy who can put everything on really cheap, but we still have to get all the parts. Rear quarter panels are the major concern at the moment - I can't find them anywhere.

How does he 1) still have his license 2) have insurance? Did you even check the car over to make sure that its just comestic damage?

He would pay his insurance deductible and the insurance company will take care of the rest so how would buying all these parts and getting them put on himself be much cheaper?

Of course, they'll probably drop him from their coverage afterwards because he's a high risk customer...

I cant see how buying every panel for the car and then having it painted and installed being cheaper than his deductible.

Call up a bodyshop and see if he can get generic panels.

The guy @ his insurance co. sent us to the guy who can put it all on. He told us he's smarter to do it himself. He wasn't driving too fast, he just needed new tires. He was going 20 around a curve and hit a puddle and went off the road. But yes, all the damage is cosmetic.

If his tires are bald and it's pouring outside, he was driving too fast. Driving too fast doesn't mean he was exceeding the speed limit, it simply means he was driving too fast for the conditions and too far beyond his skill level.

And like someone else said, new tires on a 1 year old car? What the hell has he been doing?

He can drive just fine, but he likes to drive fast. He was on his bluetooth w/ me when he wrecked. He told me he was slowing down to take a curve, then I heard him go down - NOT pleasant and very unforgettable. Anyways, if he had been speeding, he would have flipped at least a couple times before hitting the bottom. He ended up being about 2 feet from a tree and probably would have died if he had hit it. He likes to race and has to drive all over the place for work. He has almost 30,000 miles on that car, but I can't say that I drive any differently.

So you're saying that not only was he driving too fast for the condition of his car and the conditions of the road, he was talking on the phone. And you're also saying that he makes a regular habit of this?

Again, this kid needs to learn how to DRIVE. Plus, he deserves to have his insurance go up.

I hope you realize that you're going to get pretty much zero compassion for idiocy around here...

He's not an idiot - don't you ever talk on the phone while you're driving? I'm sure 99% of the world does. He's in college, he already pays for everything, so no, he doesn't deserve for his insurance to go up any higher than it already is. He wasn't going too fast either, 20 is not too fast, I don't care who you are - most people take the curve going 50-60mph and he would have been hit had he been going any slower. It was pouring outside and he was on his way home from work.

Have you ever gotten in a wreck? If so, was it absolutely your fault? Aren't they called "accicdents" for a reason? More than anything he was jsut pissed off that it happened again. He had an appointment this week (scheduled 1 week before the wreck) to get new tires, but obviously that was too late.

Anyways, I asked you guys to help me finding parts and for advice on what I should tell him to do, not for criticism. I'm just glad he didn't die and it would be really great if I could get the screaming out of my head, but I can't. So seeing that you're calling him an idiot really isn't doing anything for anyone. I'm not looking nor asking for your sympathy, I'm asking for your help. If that's too much, then you need not relpy.

Go to car talk is you want a lecture.

Go to scionlife.com if you want info on a tc and a lecture.

If he has learned anything from this thread, it is he won't be explaining how the accident happened over at scionlife.com to avoid the lecture part.

You're going to produce dumb ass kids...I fear for the gene pool.

As for advice, insurance is the way to go - insurance will go up, but you pay for insurance for a reason.

This is the wrong forum to be asking about Scion parts. As Saki suggested, there are other forums that will be able to provide better answers.

Bon chance.

No wonder you're so defensive when everyone is calling him an idiot...

And I still stand by my statement that he needs to learn how to drive.

The scion forums will know where to get parts better than we will anyway.

IMO I think he bought the wrong car for his driving style. The tC is in no way a handling beast, even without bald tires.

I hit black ice once in my neighborhood in the TL. I've made that corner literally thousands of times in like 5 different cars. I was going about 25 when I hit it, and there was no saving it. I spun about 180 degrees and went into a ditch.

Okay, I'm not trying to say that if it could happen to me, it could happen to anyone. I'm not Michael Schumacher. But then again, I'm not a totally bad driver, either. Sometimes, shit just happens that's beyond your control. *shrug*

And no, I'm not trying to defend this tC driver. I'm just saying, it COULD happen even if you weren't being stupid. Well, that, and ice is worse than a puddle.
