Would you trade your TL for an 04 Cobra?

The plan was for me to trade my 04 SSM 6-speed without nav for a 07-08 Type-S this summer but this 04 Cobra with 37k miles for $20,000 has come up! I mean who the hell can say no to 390 horsepower+the sound of a supercharger? The dealerships owner is a close family friend so he sells me cars for the same price he gets it at an auction. I got my TL from him for $10,300 almost a year ago with 105k miles and it was in such good condition that half my friends thought it was new. Growing up i loved cars, and my dad bought a brand new blue 2000 V6 5-speed Mustang and i loved it as a kid. He would always let me sit passanger and change gears for him when i was like 9 lol.. But anyway just let me know what you guys think of the car and if its worth it. I just can't make up my mind . Heres the link, i will post my own pics when i test drive it later this week.

http://www.autocityva.com/vehicle_pa...-MUSTANG.shtml

If you click the picture on the site above you can see bigger pics of the car.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say heck no. Mid 00s Ford products certainly did not have the reliability of mid 00s Honda/Acura products. The car sounds good on paper but in actuality when the repair bills start coming in, I'm certain you will reconsider.

The 03 cobra has a pretty strong engine in itself. Modifying it requires small hands dont like the cramped engine bay...Headers arent fun. Insurance will rape you at your age for that vehicle but I doubt your paying for it. Anyway its a nice car but a c5 z06 vette will still eat it for breakfast. The problem with cobras/mustangs in general they keep on getting heavier. If you want a fast car I would recommend a z06 they go for pretty cheap from sellers nowadays so that means you should be able to get them cheap from auction.

Paging Nicky Pass....

As far as my opinion... two totally different animals... can't even compare them. Do you like Filet or do you like Flank Steaks? Would you trade your Filet for a Flank?

at 17 i would. When i was 17 i had a 1997 WS-6 trans am and kept it till i was 21. Loved every second of that car! Now your talking about a car that has 90hp than my TA did, and those cars are underated from the factory. But if y ou wan a go-fast-car, bang for buck c5 z06. 01-385hp and 02-04 405hp..and those are underated, i herd somewhere there in the area of 430...Also depends on what you want to do..i love my TL now, but im a little bit older and like the 4 doors coupled with the sportyness....if i were u...why the hell not? looks like a head turner as well!!

Ohhhh mystic paint. Ain't pretty but it's a decently rare car if I remember correctly that they didn't paint many cars in that color.

If it was a weekend cruiser/racer, then I'd say hell yes, but as a daily driver, nah, stick with the TL or get something else comfy but decently fast.

What are looking for? The TL offers refinement and practicality. The Cobra offers addicting torque and rear driven dynamics. I'd also factor in such things as insurance costs and where you currently reside.

I have a few friends that owned the 390 hp Cobras, and they never had any problem with them. They were, however, uncomfortable and uncompromising. The TL is refined, even elegant in some respects, and offers good comfort and safety. It isn't a muscle car however, and isn't always the most entertaining car to drive.

If you're looking for a rear driven, tire smoking, hotrod with tons of torque then go for the Cobra. Be prepared to fuel it often, pay plenty for insurance, and lose some practicality. If you want a car with good fuel mileage, very good road manners, and practicality, then the TL should be your choice.

Why a 17 year old would want an Acura TL is beyond me.

Get the Cobra.

I'm gonna echo what people said earlier but in reverse.... at your age I wouldn't buy at my age I would. I don't succumb to street races like most other people my age and I never really have, but even still at 17 I most likely would have wrecked a Cobra if I had one. If you can corral that pony, you'll be a better driver for it, but if not you might end up wrapping it around a tree and possibly killing yourself.

I say no, unless you have had a good bit of track day driving instruction in a similar vehicle. Those cars are very very fast, very uncompromising, very heavy, and can be pretty tricky to drive at the limit. It WILL bite you unless you are on top of it 100% of the time. It will suck in inclement weather, destroy you on insurance and gas mileage, and its a ripoff magnet.

Look, I had a fire breather back when I was your age. My Camaro was just about the fastest car in school, and several of my buddies bought similar hot rods. Half of those cars got wrecked in one way or another, but I managed to keep mine on the road because I was taught to drive by an ex-racer who showed me all the things you don't learn in drivers ed. I was lucky.

Believe me I know its really tempting, but as the old saying goes....discretion is the better part of valor. Wait 'til you're out of college for a wild ride like that.

they said that about a TL? sorry but you'd have to have balls bigger than your brains to wreck a TL by taking it to the limit. I've driven an 03 Cobra and its a whole different animal.... it's VERY capable for a car that size but it'll easily get out of line and bite you in the ass if you're not paying attention completely.

No. With the way the police are around here you'd easily rack up a few tickets in the first few months and increase your already outrageous insurance rates.

Plus, the interior of the Ford sucks. Like, really really really sucks.

I forgot to add that i drove a 04 GT Mustang convertible 5-speed a few months ago and fell in love with the sound of the V8! The rest sucked balls though... interior looked like it was from 20 years ago compared to my TL, the sound system sucked, and the handling of the GT sucked big time!!! But i hear the cobras handling is much better.

I will vote against getting the Cobra. In other circumstances, I would say do it in a heartbeat. I had the chance of driving a red modified one in 05 and it was an absolute blast, the car is very fun to drive but also very edgy. Definitely something I wouldn't trust in rain or snow. Like everyone else said, it's perfect as a weekend car but definitely not as a daily driver..wait a few years and pick up a Shelby GT500 vert, with depreciation, they should be right about there.

You'll still love the sound of a V8 when you're out of school. Seriously... the insurance rates I was paying on my CL were outrageous when I was 20; I can't even imagine when they are for a 17 year old on a Cobra.
