Would you REALLY own an exotic?

I saw a Ferrari F355 convertible parallel parked on the street the other day. It made me remember my trip to LA where I saw a black Murcielago ripping through rush hour street traffic (the most amazing sight I've ever seen--that car sounds AWESOME). That and the many threads about people's TSXes getting hit/damaged got me to thinking:

Even if I had the money to buy an exotic car, I don't think I could own one. I'd be afraid to drive it anywhere, and constantly worried about leaving it somewhere so some idiot could hit it with thier underinsured POS. I think the most exotic car I could ever contemplate is something like a 911 Turbo.

So everyone SAYS "If I was rich I'd get a Ferrari/Lambo/Zonda/Konigsegg/etc.", but would you really? Think about it.... Where would you drive it?

Absolutely but I wouldn't torture it by driving to the mall. Exotics belong on the race track and on sunday drives. Picking up groceries in a Lambo is .

If you can afford the exotic, you are less likely to worry about accidents, because well, you can afford those too.

Its weird for me to see these 100k cars parked with their roofs down, just sitting their so vulnerable to any idiot walking by. I dont think I could do it

Or the other day when I saw a 360 Modena make a u-turn in very congested downtown traffic, and then quickly parralel park into a tight space. For some reason that just blew my mind. .. but maybe thats just me.

I guess If I was rich enough to afford it, I probably would be rich enough to repair it. I would mostly use it for joy rides or taking it to the track on weekends anyways.

I work with people who are WAY more fortunate than 99% of the population, and it's a completely different mentality. Like the one guy who takes me McDonalds in his SL55, and waits to get a spot as close to the door as possible!? Like I said, when you can afford it, you just don't worry, but if you are someone who mortgages the house for a 575M, then you REALLY worry...all the time.

Ive seen 350K Bentley's in parking lots in Irvine. I think when you have that much money, its not as big of a deal. Esp when you pay people to take care of the car for you anyway. Jay Leno has his own mechanic for all his cars

But yea, using a Lambo for anything other then crusing just wouldnt be right.

I looked into a Delorean for a project car, but the cheapest I found was $10k in working condition (1981, 80K miles). I don't have that kind of money. :o

, I imagine filthy rich people just have a different mentality. If you can afford 1 exotic, you can probably afford 2, or 3, etc.

1st question should be.. CAN I really own an exotic?

Yes but a used one, say an NSX from the early 1990's.

If I ever get to the point where 100,000 dollar cars become the norm... well, I think it is time (for me at least) to rediscover my priorities in life. There is more than just money in life.

If I were rich, I'd probably get some older Hondas a fix 'em up so they look/drive like new. Older Preludes, Accords and Legends for example

This is why I would get a Porsche 911 turbo circa 1996...

Not quite an exotic, but still gives the driver the thrills of driving something much more expensive. Maintaining a Lambo or Ferrari would just be so draining financially that I don't think it would be worth it unless you are living the life.

I know this sounds wrong, but when I become a doctor, I think that's the one thing I want to spoil myself with... a 911 turbo...

See, this is why a friend of mine tried to start this company...

http://www.vanquishenterprises.com/theEquus.htm

He actually had a number of celebrity types interested, but couldn't get a venture capital to fund him. He's still on the prowl so if you know anyone that's interested in working on something like this, lemme know and I'll pass it on to him.

I would definitely buy an exotic if I have enough money to maintain one, but I would definitely buy a commute car as well.

I hope you realize that it ain't easy being a doc. The hours are long and you'll likely spend the first ten years after school doing nothing but paying off loans. The profession is noble, but with the way insurance companies are screwing doctors over, it's really getting pretty ugly. And without tort reform, malpractice insurance rates are going through the roof. They are set to rise 40% this year and as much as 127% next year.

The lack of tort reform was a huge part in my decision to not attend med school.

My only suggestion, do some research about the area in which you are interested in becoming a doctor in and make sure that you understand the hard work required and the dedication. It's not for everyone, but for those who really want it, it can be a rewarding profession.

I ended up studying Biotechnology. Gonna eventually work in the biotech field. It has some of the noble qualities of being a doc without all the pains of dealing with the insurance companies.

I took Biotechnology as an elective course in school and oddly enough it was the course I did the best in. I found it fascinating so the assignments went quickly and were actually enjoyable to do.

The pay is never good when you start with just a Bachelor's but the potential is unlimited. Trust me, straight out of med school, your pay will be :shit: too, but there is a great deal of potential in the future.

Actually your mom should rephrase it to "you will not get a hot wife without making enough money" i seen alot of married couples in 86 civic hatch backs with blue smoke blowing out of the exhaust pipe. The wives were generally fat and ugly. Now have you ever seen a fat and ugly wife riding shotgun in a 360 modena??? i think not. "first you get the money, then you get the power, then you get the pu**y!! soo true

this is also very very true. I have a bachlor's in bussiness i graded this past may, now i work as a commercial lendor for one of the banks in town, pays around 40k with bonuses. Alot of my friends say that i am very lucky to get this job, but when i was in school i hearded stories that people whom graded last year landed jobs on wall street and was pulling down 120k u.s.. Then again there are alot of people with degrees don't have jobs. Point being to land a great job you not only have to have an education but you also have to have some luck.

ok buddy if you wanna have a good paying job in the fastest amount of time possible you should get a degree in accounting. after 4 years of university you be pulling down around 45k before taxes. Then you can take courses become a chartered account in another 2 years while you work so that should pay you around 60-70. Then you'll hopefully make junior partner in another 3 years or so and your lookin at 100k plus. So basically you can be makin 100k plus 9 years after highschool or at age 27. If you wanna become a doctor you wouldn't even be done residency at age 27. Keep in mind i live in canada so it could be different in the states but i doubt there is that much difference. Until then hit the books

Or you can go to law school and be making 100k 1 or 2 years out of school with a big firm. Make partner in a few years and be making 500k+. Plus I'd say by age 30 the Dr. would have matched and passed the acountant anyways.

That is incorrect. To cash in big as a doctor you have to specialize in something or if your a surgon. I had a chat with my doc the other day and he was complaining about how he's not gettin paid very much and he works llike 14 hour days most of the time, thats for a regular family doctor. But if you wanna become a specialist then you probably won't start gettin paid big untill your in your 40's. If your an accountant and assuming that you work hard by the time your in your 40's you should have made partner already and you would be pulling down around 400k, and you wouldn't be gettin phone calls in the middle of the night telling you to get to the hospital asap for emergence surgery

1/ Canada is very different that the US because of the medical system. But I would still wager that what your Doc considers "not getting paid very much" is over 6 figures. I'm sure dr's who arent specialists make very good money, and have a relatively easy job.

2/ I know accountants, and they work ALOT. Late nights, weekends, you name it. So a 14 hour day for an accountant in a big firm is not uncommon. As for getting phone calls in the middle of the night, well if you are a surgeon you are making a ton of money to take that call.

3/ What percentage of accountants do you think end up partner in a big firm? I'd say they are in the minority. I am sure the average Dr. salary is much higher than that of an average accountant.

EDIT: Just looked it up. Median salary for an accountant in the US is $40K. Median salary for a physician is $120k. (Remember, thats MEDIAN)

4/ Not everyone wants to be doing audits for the rest of their lives.

I'm not saying an accountant is bad job, it can be a really good job. But I think you are being a bit unrealistic.

Well someone i know 'relatively' well is a doctor, and makes around 130 1st year as a Dr. Not only that but in his off time he does phone calls for a prescription company landing him around 2k a week just from that.... Dr.'s will and always make tons of money. By the way he is a general doctor at the hospital. Oh btw, if the accountant were to make a partnership and supposedly makes 400k a year, the doctor could do the same and most likely will get more (no?) if he starts his own practice.

well if you start your own practice then your gona have to pay for all your equipment not to mention leasing a place. Trust me medical equipment is not cheap. That being said i have nothing against doctors or anything, i am not saying an accountant is a better profession then being a doctor. All i am saying is that if you wanna make money asap then you would go the route of getting a bussiness degree with a concentration in accounting or finance. As for potential well the last time i checked the top CEO's and directors of fortune 500 companies make about twice as much as shaq when you count in the stock options.

And not goin of topic too far, I would only own an exotic if i make twice as much as it costs to purchase the car. example, i would only buy a 230k car if i make 460k plus. On a side note what exactly classifies a car as being an exotic car. Would you guys consider a 175k benz sl65 an exotic? or does an exotic car have to come from italy

IMO to be classified as "exotic" or supercar, it needs to be hand made and low volume.
