Would you pay someone if they got you a good deal (i.e. around invoice) on a car?

Nope...Invoice is a fictitious number used as a negotiating point from MSRP - another fictitious number.

The only number that would be worth a side commission would be the number the dealer is into the car for plus hold back. That person would have to be a GSM or GM to even get that info.

But...getting the car "at" invoice is probably a pretty good deal. If my friend was the sales person, I'd buy a couple rounds of beer.

Oh ... I was just curious because I helped a couple of people get a 2007 Infiniti G35 for $500 over invoice back in November/December 2006 and they wanted to pay me, but I didn't accept the money.

Well, the 2007 Infiniti G35 was going for MSRP or $500 below MSRP at that time.

That's cool if you could influence the deal...saved your friends from the b.s. of haggling and all the other crap. Worth it's weight in gold if you know someone who can just get you in the door and do the deal.

Props...e-rep!

there are car brokers out there so the idea is not a bad one. my buddy used one- basically paid the broker a fee like 200-300 bucks and guy finds the lowest deal possible usually at or slightly below invoice. if your time is worth more than 200-300 bucks then by all means, this could be a good option for some. then again, there are some that enjoy the car buying purchase regardless of how long it takes.

New cars are not where the deals happen anyway! Most new car dealers are lucky to make $500 on new car sales with all the promotions like employee pricing and other stuff. Flooring costs are not designed to be profit for the dealer, it's supposed to actually pay for interest that the dealer is paying and utilities to run the dealership.

That being said, I would pay someone with a dealer's license to get me a used car from an auction! There's still lots of markup in used cars.

At my age, I've gotten pretty good at the "game". I love it when a salesperson, half my age, says "what would it take for you to drive away with this today?" or "come on inside and fill out these papers"....

I never buy on the first visit, no matter what. It makes 'em crazy. Also ask them to put their best offer in writing. Time is on your side, and I can grind with the best of them.

I hate to say it, but I kind of enjoy it.

how much were they thinking of paying you? And how well do you know them? Friend? or like friend's of friends

I'd probably accept a GOOD meal or something, if i knew them pretty well. Course I can probably easily spend over $100 on myself at a good sushi restaurant. If I wasn't ever going to talk to them again, and they wanted to give me money, I'd probably take a little bit. Or if they're hot, sexual favors always work.

Auction requires a "Wholesaler's License". Wifey is a licensed wholesaler and will get her "Dealer's License" next month. That's a year long program at the NADA Dealer's Academy. Need a Dealer to sponsor you and the registration fees are pretty hefty. With that, you can sell new cars for a manufacturer.

Regardless...tnobori1 is right...there's no real money in new cars. The dealers make all their profits on used cars, financing, and service. That's why 5-star ratings and all that is so important. The better the rating, the better incentives the manufacturers offer the dealers.

If you know someone who can get you a car at an auction, be prepared to pay cash. They don't finance you there.

I saw a TV clip on a Broker and it seems if you find a good Broker, you can save money. The 1 dealer they interviewed said they deal alot with the Broker and since she knew her stuff, he just made sure he gave her a great deal.

I know for $300, I would...

They offered to pay me $200. There were three people so I would have made $600. I helped a friend, he told one of his relatives, and she told one of her friends. They all saved $2,800 on a new generation car that was only out a couple of weeks. Plus, they got some free accessories. It's probably not good that I asked this question on AcuraZine because most of the members on here know how to research/negotiate and aren’t the average buyer.

Personally I think you did the right thing ignoring it. Generosity has a way of makings its rounds. (I'm a bit of a karma guy.)
