Would you keep or trade???

ok hear is the deal....I have a 97 acura cl and its in pretty good condition but my hubby says it needs to go. My thing is that its paid off and i kind of like paying a car note that is going to my savings account. we have a truck so its not like we just have to get a new car but he says the transmission is on its way out again. ok i replaced the transmission in like 03' but even if i have to do it again, it still beats paying a note right???? opinions please...

I misread...the tranny on the CL is getting ready to go again....

What make/year is the truck...maybe you should get rid of the CL.

I am just not on the ball with reading comprehansion tonight.

for 500 bucks hell I'd go ahead fix it and keep it. as long as it's paid off.
yeah it's cool to have a new car but the sucky part it when you're paying on it. plus insurance is higher on newer cars.
as long as it runs good , and you like it I'd say fix it and keep it.

Keep. Sounds like your husband just doesn't want to do the work on the CL to install the new tranny.

that's what i told him but he says to get a good tranny we are going to have to spend about $3000 along with everything else we will have to replace in the car so we might as well get another one. I am really lost with that comparison right now but maybe someone can shed some light on me with this.

Well, my rule on getting a new car when I already have one that is paid off is if the cost of maintaining the car each year is going to end up being higher than or equal to the payments on a new car, you might as well get a new car.

If getting this tranny means the car will last another 3 years, you can split that cost over the three years and see that it will be far less than the cost of a new vehicle.

true that makes sense. however, he says that if we replace the tranny then we will have to replace everything else which will drive the cost up and at that price we should just get a new one.

Can you sell your car and use the money that you have been saving to buy a good used car? Maybe a newer CL with less miles?

I got rid of my 97 3.0CL last January beacause the tranny went out. I TOTALLY regret that, I could have gotten a small loan for the tranny then pay it off in 6 months and still have the damn thing and NO car note. KEEP IT!!!!!!!!!!!

Even if he traded his SUV in Dodge's resale value on the Durango is so shitty that unless you get something older or high miles you guys will have to take out a loan. so if you guys don't have the money to fix the CL at this point you have 4 options i can think of #1. sell it "as is"(you'll take a horrible loss with the tranny going out) #2. borrow money from the bank #3. save a little here and there in order to eventally get it done.#4. Park it for now get a temporary car drive a beater for 6 months-12months till you get money then buy the transmission then sell the beater.

well today we actually decided to get an Acura MDX so we are going to trade in the Durango. Its pretty sweet, black on black with the navigator. I think we will just hold onto the CL as a second hand. Thanks for your opinions, the wife always wins!!

Keep the car you like and fix the transmission. Having no car payment at all is MUCH better than starting all over again paying on a car you will not like as much as the one you already have.
